Above the law. 2017. France.

A elaborate bank heist ends with the cops killing and capturing one of the robbers, but an extra series of killings to cover a group from years ago threaten to expose a senior officer.
Lean, tense and action packed crime thriller with a small cast, 90 minute run time and a steady plot the slowly links all the main players.

The sadness. Taiwan. 2021.

A virus makes be go mad.
Ultra violent but only good for about 45 minutes. From there it just got dumb. The 'infected' were sex crazed violent idiots that could communicate with their victims.
Effects were great, plot not so much.

In our prime. 2022. South Korea.

A defector from the north works as a campus security guard. But is a world famous maths expert.
Nice drama about him helping a student who then gets blamed for leaking answers to a test and he gets exposed as the expert. Stars Choi Min Sik.
Typical sort of storyline but with the kind of depth and heartwarming finale that most korean films have.

The batman. 2021.

Masked crusader battles crime in Gotham.
A visually dark film with a nearly three hour time. Interesting way it sets up the main characters and bad guys. Overall the film looks great and has a crime drama feel about it as Batman and the cops try to solve the riddles. There was alot said comparing it to Seven and Zodiac.
Yes, style wise, but it thought more like Chinatown (1974 starring Jack Nicholson) as he slowly put it all together.
I didn't last the full three hours before fastforwarding thru it. One hour forty five was about my limit and i got bored by the slow pace.

History of the occult. 2020. Argentina.

A current affair news show uses it last show to prove a link between the president and a group linked to the occult.
Shown in black and white with a few uses of colour it's a low budget but compelling watch. The 'show' aims to present links to the current president and the rise of his political party to the origins of occult group. Heavy on dialogue and names it makes you pay attention, the tension is slow but interesting as it goes on. Run time is just under 90mins. There is a reference to Rosemary's baby and The exorcist, two films which is draws inspiration from but doesn't copy.
Good film with creepy vibe.

4 friends and one other bloke having a drink. One asks a question which leads to a situation of freedom of death.
Very philosophical film the is entirely dialogue heavy. The friends are joined in the bar by a bloke who is a photographer, its near the end of WW2.
The question simply is, is it better to be the master or the slave. There is a setting and reasoning for both positions.
The men go there on way but the four friends are arrested the next night. The are beaten and then presented with a way out.
Before them is a nearly dead man who was caught for a bombing. Slap him on the face twice and you will be set free.
The whole film is a discussion of different things. Not in a 'The Office' type of way, but philosophical. It is interesting but after a while does feel like it drags.
When the question is asked with the back story about the slave and master it has a really balanced thought provoking feel to it. When it comes to the prison scene that reason for their arrest is trivial but their release must deny them of of any self respect.
Overall a good tense drama that was well scripted and filmed.
There is not trailer. This is two blokes discussing the film.

Red Heat. 1988.

Buddy cop 'eighties action' film.
Typical style of violent action film with loads of funny one liners. Largely forgotten now but still entertaining with the typical sterotypes that were used at the time. It could be said that this was a 'american film' as oposed to the endless superhero films that are geared to appeal to a global audience now. The tension between the cops makes for a interesting storyline. Schwarzenegger and Belushi are well cast. Arnie basicly acting like the terminator with a few more lines and Jim an angry smartarse. The rest of the cast is strong with believeable, if some what cartoonish characters.
The actions scenes are violent and over the top which keep me interested.

War and peace. 1966-1967. Russia.

Broken into four films. Iv watched the first two.
Sweeping epic that is deserving of all the praise. The scenes are set and filmed in huge rooms with a impressive amount of talent. The war scenes in the first film are not overly brutal but very large with hundreds of soldiers and horses. The scale can not be overstated. Remarkable given the green screen garbage that passes for film today.
The story itself is slow. Mainly dealing with two high society families it has alot of drama. The first one moves at a steady pace, bloke goes off to fight in the war against the French, leaves pregnant wife with father. Other bloke is bastard son who has done well himself of high society bloke, gets it all when dad dies. Marries a older woman.
Second film slows down alot. Bloke who went off to war, presumed dead, isn't, comes back, wife dies, looks to marry other blokes young cousin.
Dad says, wait a year. He goes away and the film, despite it continued epic grander grinds to a near halt. She falls for other guy, he finds out, ditches her.
Ends with more war on the horizon. Everything about the film is epic. The rooms are large and fully furnished, the costumes well detailed. The acting is earnest but not cheesy. It just gets bogged down a bit in the loneliness factor of the young woman. But even that is well thought out so as not to be to much of a bore.

The unjust. 2010. South Korea.

A cop frames a bloke for serial murder and things gets very messy.
Excellent crime thriller with a variety of characters. The police are looking to get a serial killer case solved, so they assign a captain and his team.
They in turn enlist a shady businessman and his mates to force a suspect to 'confess' to the crime. The prosecutor has his own shady dealings going on with a another businessman. It starts to go down in a big way when the prosecutor learns the suspect is just a idiot and the media are being leaked info.
The plot is layered with double crosses with all sides getting evidence on the other. Quite a good film that doesn't have a 'happy ending'.
Carefully sets out the level of corruption in the justice system with all side ready to fuck the other.

War and peace. (part 3) Russia
9/10
Total war.
The third part of the film is pretty much a decisive battle where the Russian army is holding of the advance of the French.
And what an advance.
Filmed with a huge amount of extras, horses and cannons its a visual unsurpassed. The 'bastard son' has come to 'help'. He just takes in a huge amount of crazy and doesn't do anything. The son who ditched his wife is in the thick of it. There are scenes with his father dying knowing that French are coming and they provide a nice prelude to the chaos that happens.
A monologue is given by the army son that really sums up war at it's most basic. (summarized) "We have 100,000 men, they have 100,000 men, i expect us to have 20,000 wounded by the end of the day. 200,000 men will do combat. The victor will be the one with the least losses. That will depend on each mans will and strength to carry on. After it all, we will all be murderers and we will pray to be forgiven. Hailed as heros by our population."
The war is stylized and graceful, but brutal and unforgiving. The tactics are basic, two armies facing off so the dead are huge, shown gracefully with a aireal shot of the dead. Run time of 80 mins make it short and interesting with not second wasted.
