I'm not too familiar with British politics but I do believe that shortly after WWII the conservative Prime Minister Churchill was voted out of Parliament and this lead to a cascading liberalization of their government culminating in the 60's and 70's when something known as the British Welfare State was established. The British Empire, which had existed for over 100 years by this point, began a period of decline and ultimate collapse. So awful was the welfare state that Great Britain was by the turn of the century superceded economically by Germany which it still is to this day.

I grew up then, thing was most working class families didn’t wanna be seen going on welfare, and if they did have to it was a temporary measure until they got their feet back on the ground, now it’s a way of life
You missed the part about Great Britain being flat-broke after the War, and we had to break-up our empire to shrug off some of the debts of reconstruction. Unfortunately, the citizens of many of the lands we had "domesticated" (read that as "exploited") now had British citizenship, so they flocked to our shores in their droves before their countries gained complete independence. Which I have no issue with - we fucked them, so they can come here and be just as listless as everyone else.
But I agree with @Jizdrop1 - we have no responsibility to anyone not of British birth or citizenship, while our own economy is at a low-tide. Tell them to fuck off, and if they keep coming.... we gun them down. Violence sends a direct message. Shame our government is packed full of cash-grabbing crooks with all the backbone of a supersized jello.
