Favorite “Golden Age Of Hollywood” Female Actors?

I’ll post four and in no particular order of importance, it’s just how I think and feel. You can use this list article to spark your memory: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls006297369/

Ok so on to my picks…

Yvonne De Carlo:

- She was in The Ten Commandments epic and she is beautiful but what hits it out of the park is she is Lily in The Munsters tv show. What’s not to love about that.

Judy Garland:

  • Wizard of Oz, which I have a childhood connection too, and a talent. Also such a tragic tale, a sympathetic woman who was thrown to the Hollywood wolves when she was very young.

Ava Gardner:

Rita Hayworth:

  • I like them both for the same reason so I will combine my reasons. They are the most beautiful by far to me, the longer flowing hair in an era where that was rare. That and also what I have read about them it seems they were very smart and cool and fun people. this makes them some my favorite actresses from this era.

So who do you like and why? I’m curious. Also do you watch this era of movies?

PS: Thinking about Marylin Monroe and that movie about her made me think of this era. I’m going to make a male version of this in another thread so keep that in mind. I might do a New Hollywood era version too but no promises.

Why her? And why do you hate it?
Why Lauren Bacall? Because she was blindingly gorgeous, and those eyes are hypnotic, if not downright intimidating.

Why do I hate the Golden Age of Hollywood? I prefer small films brimming with heart and creativity. I also prefer the cinema that pre- and post-dated that era. The Golden Age was noted for its glitz, glamour, movie stars, larger-than-life red carpet premiers, pomp, grandeur, etc. It was about industry product and financial return. It was not about art. It was about deifying movie stars, and selling them to the public. It is true that began before the Golden Age (in the Silent Era), but the 40s and 50s were the peak, and we still live with the legacy of that Hollywood star system today; and people still give a shit about movie stars and the garbage films they perform in.

Stylistically, I can't stomach the artifice of those films. They are so stilted. The Hays Code of the era also ensured that the products were safe for public consumption - which is not quite the same as censorship, but it still limited the exploration and portrayal of certain themes and topics; which, as far as art is concerned, is a no-no. Compare those films to 20's and 30's German cinema, and there is a world of difference with regards to the art and creativity fueling film production. Or, compare it to the vitality and passion of the French New Wave, which was a reaction against that type of finance-centered and formulaic cinema, that had by then spread across the sea. There's no comparison for me. People often think of the Golden Age as the peak of American cinema, but I think it was damn near the nadir. Generally, it's also just difficult for me to sit through knowing that there's a world of better cinema out there.

In all fairness if I was gonna go back in time and pork one of these birds it would probably be Audrey Hepburn. Wanked over breakfast at Tiffany's enough as a kid. Probably disd every sock in my drawer.
Or the bird out the dinosaur film with the home made furry bikini.

Yea I agree her eyes are very unique and she is beautiful. I don’t know anything about her life or personality though.

I gotta disagree with you. Well I agree with eh celebrity culture stuff but I don’t think that’s what made that era of movies not the best. I think it’s the hays code, that came out in the 30s that really censored film. That’s was stilted that era, not celebrity culture, I think. Even so there were still great movies like Paths of Glory:

And there were dark films, I highly recommend this one, Nightmare Alley:

Sunset Boulevard:

His Girl Friday; which I discovered on a list of Tarantino’s favorite movies:

His Girl Friday | Rotten Tomatoes
His Girl Friday (1940)

Weirdly a lot of them are in the 40s, idk if that’s coincidence or not.

But yea I agree with you largely. What era of movies is your favorite?

although she pre-dates the so called golden era a tad, i always liked Florence Roberts

the way she basically told barnaby to go fuck himself always turned me on and gave me a boner

I gather you didn't know who she was and googled her in front of the kids. Whoops. Best delete that search history bro :pedobear:
Who has heard of them lol, I watch and listen to Howard Stern and have since I was a teenager and they were on the show and Howard and crew would faun over them and I didn’t get it, I don’t understand how they are considered bombshells but who the fuck am I…

You're right, I can't and don't hate all the films from that era, but I have a difficult time watching most of them; largely because the films are generally so polished and artificial in a style and manner that I do not enjoy. Paths of Glory is great for it's moral and political themes, and I suppose it was gritty enough for the time. I've seen a lot of films from that era because I generally love cinema and its history, but I haven't seen Nightmare Alley. I'll check that one out. When it comes down to it though - when choosing a film to watch - the choice between the Golden Age and most any other age from any other regional cinema, is an easy one for me to make.

My favorite eras of American cinema would probably be the silent era, as well as the 1970s when new filmmakers were reacting against the Golden Age and making a number of small-budgeted but brilliant films. Otherwise, the German silent era is a perennial favorite; so is the French New Wave. Considering your politics, you might like Italian Neo-Realist cinema for its themes. Lots of classic Italian films came from that era (e.g., Bicycle Thieves). Coincidentally, I think it's also called the Golden Age of Italian cinema.

For all you Nazis out there.
Marlene Dietrich
WRONG !!! She left Germany when she saw the Nazis coming to power you imbecile of history! She is the LAST person that Germans would call a Nazi. In fact....there were many Germans who wanted her shot as a traitor to the 3rd Reich. You know nothing. ( Your problem is that you think all Germans are Nazis. Only 33% of the German populace voted for Hitler...and in Marlene's neighborhood of Berlin only 15%
