You're right, I can't and don't hate all the films from that era, but I have a difficult time watching most of them; largely because the films are generally so polished and artificial in a style and manner that I do not enjoy. Paths of Glory is great for it's moral and political themes, and I suppose it was gritty enough for the time. I've seen a lot of films from that era because I generally love cinema and its history, but I haven't seen Nightmare Alley. I'll check that one out. When it comes down to it though - when choosing a film to watch - the choice between the Golden Age and most any other age from any other regional cinema, is an easy one for me to make.

My favorite eras of American cinema would probably be the silent era, as well as the 1970s when new filmmakers were reacting against the Golden Age and making a number of small-budgeted but brilliant films. Otherwise, the German silent era is a perennial favorite; so is the French New Wave. Considering your politics, you might like Italian Neo-Realist cinema for its themes. Lots of classic Italian films came from that era (e.g., Bicycle Thieves). Coincidentally, I think it's also called the Golden Age of Italian cinema.

I see silent films as artificial but maybe we have different definitions of that word in this context. Nightmare Alley is a hidden gem, with your movie recommendations I think you might like it! I agree that I prefer other eras. I like the New Hollywood era too but also the 90s is another great era. Movies like American Beauty and Boogie Nights. It was kinda a revival of New Hollywood in that it was a backlash against the 80s which was trying to be the 50s Part 2. I’ll look up Bicycle Themes. I don’t know Italian cinema very well. British is the foreign films I know most about. Have you seen a movie called Reds? You are on the left right? I gather that from what you’ve said in political discussion around here. Nightmare alley is on the torrent sites which is better than Tubi which has commercials. You might use an ad blocker though.
