I agree. Imagine a basic course written in script which reads the basics about how a clutch disengages the transmission in order to simply switch gears.
With manual I feel like I'm controlling the car, almost as i'm a part of it, with automatic this doesn't happen.
I know this has to do with each person's experience.
Never learned, but there weren't manual vehicles owned by my household growing up. I've simply learned to listen to an automatic and understand when it's trying to shift, and how to let it reach that next gear.
1000000%. I own a vehicle with a DSG auto transmission. You can mimic a manual transmission. I will not lie…the response would be hard to imitate on a manual BUT it’s just not the same as a manual transmission where the driver has full control.
There lies the problem. Driving a manual vehicle is very different and you not just enjoy it but bond with a machine. If that makes sense.
Except stuck on traffic as the article stated which is true.
Drove manual when I first started driving, probably haven't drove a manual in 20 years. Also live in a city with shit traffic manual wouldnt be ideal. Currently driving a Volkswagen with 7 speed DSG.

Stuck in traffic doesn't make any difference, you shift gears without thinking. It's not a big deal. I like to play with the gears so, can be fun.
Yup. Been there. Just don’t ride that clutch too much.
I can. Not hard really. Just a little practice you'll never grind again. Two days tops.
Warranties are loath to cover manuals is the problem.
Similar to riding a bicycle. Once you learn you never forget.

Some vehicles are both these days I.E. one's equipped with Street-Racing-Technology (SRT) chips . You gotta throw it in race mode first but then you do the shifting. If you can't find it though, you grind it & the car will need servicing way sooner & also you will need a larger petrol & tire maintenance budget. Otherwise it's best to keep it automatic.
Like most Dutchies, I drive manual/stick. And I love it. Like OP said, it's the feeling of control, you are driving, not the car. If that makes sense.

Add in that they must demonstrate a basic level of proficiency as well during which time there will also be a roadside tire change. Their minds would be blown!

Yes I can. Started with tractors before car. The car I learned to drive with was my dad’s 1969 Grand Prix (modelS J, the year DeLorean designed it) I had to parallel park that car for the driver’s test, which was hard cuz the front end was wayyy long. 455 4 barrel V8. Was lots of fun to drive. Spent time collecting tickets for unnecessary noise 😛.
I have a "sport" button. Don't ask me what it does. I've read irs good in the snow. Doesn't coast when you let off the gas.
