Several women’s groups that supported the appeal celebrated outside court and hailed it as a major victory in their effort to protect spaces designated for women.

“Everyone knows what sex is and you can’t change it,” said Susan Smith, co-director of For Women Scotland, which brought the case. “It’s common sense, basic common sense and the fact that we have been down a rabbit hole where people have tried to deny science and to deny reality and hopefully this will now see us back to reality.”

The judiciary in the UK are (at least in theory) not subject to political interference. The government and prime minister are not above the law, and they can't just ignore or override court decisions which don't suit them, unlike leaders in some other countries I could mention (I can hear people saying "ahem...Boris Johnson" but that kind of proves the point - his arrogance and contempt for the law were major factors in his downfall). They could appeal against lower court rulings, but the Supreme Court is the highest court in the land so in this case there's nowhere for them to go.

Ultimately the elected House of Commons *is* the legislature and as such a member could introduce a bill to reverse the decision and, if it got enough support, it would pass into law, but I'd say the chances of that happening are slim to none. I'm sure any Labour MP who tried to put Kier Starmer back in the position of having to babble word salad every time we was asked the difficult question "what is a woman?" would find their career prospects seriously truncated.

BTW, it seems to have been missed in some of the posts above - the Scottish government were *defending" the action, ie they wanted to keep the status quo where biological males could legally go into womens' toilets, changing rooms etc as long as they identified as female.

It's definitely a victory for common sense, but I've got a nagging feeling that the feminist group who brought the action were coming at it mostly from a position of generally disliking men in general.
