A 17-year-old boy was seriously injured after being gored by a bull during a bullfight held on the evening of Tuesday, July 15, in the Querocoto district, Chota province, Cajamarca region. The event was part of local patron saint celebrations in honor of Saints Peter and Paul.
According to eyewitnesses, the teenager— and a native of Cutervo—entered the bullring without authorization. Reportedly under the influence of alcohol, he appeared disoriented and approached the bull. The animal reacted violently, goring him and throwing him through the air before he hit the ground, where he lay motionless.
The shocking incident caused panic among spectators. Onlookers rushed to the arena and helped carry the unconscious teenager out. He was initially taken to Santa María Hospital in Cutervo, but due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to José Hernán Soto Cadenillas Hospital in Chota.
Medical personnel diagnosed him with moderate head trauma, multiple contusions from the fall, and signs of alcohol intoxication. Emergency protocols for mass gathering incidents were activated, and the teen was kept under observation overnight.
The hospital later confirmed that he responded well to treatment, regained consciousness the following day, and showed no signs of serious internal injuries. He was discharged a few days later following a steady recovery.
At the time of the attack, the teenager was not wearing protective gear and was not officially participating in the bullfight. Authorities had allowed open access to the ring, and there appeared to be little to no control over alcohol consumption during the event.
As of now, the Municipality of Querocoto—the organizer of the celebration—has not issued any public statements regarding the incident, nor have any preventive safety measures been announced in response.
