This Sunday, a hot air balloon participating in the First Balloon Festival, held as part of the patron saint celebrations in the municipality of Enrique Estrada, Zacatecas, caught fire mid-flight. As a result of the accident, one person on board the balloon lost their life.
The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. and was captured in several videos shared on social media. The footage shows flames engulfing the balloon's basket as it begins to lose altitude. At one point, a person is seen hanging from the basket by a rope before falling to the ground in an uninhabited area.
Zacatecas Secretary of Government, Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, confirmed the victim's death and stated that local authorities promptly responded to the scene to assist those affected. He also called on the State Prosecutor's Office to carry out the necessary investigations to clarify what happened.
Reyes Mugüerza urged municipal authorities to strengthen Civil Protection verification procedures to prevent risks during future events and festivities.
"I regret to inform that during the celebration of the First Balloon Festival, held as part of the Enrique Estrada 2025 Fair organized by the municipal government, one person lost their life following a tragic incident while on board a hot air balloon. Authorities immediately responded to the scene to provide care and support to those affected," Reyes Mugüerza said in a Facebook post.
"We have asked the State Prosecutor's Office to carry out the appropriate investigations to clarify the facts and determine accountability. We urge all municipal authorities to strengthen their verification systems to prevent these kinds of risks during their events and festivities," he added in the same post.
In addition to this case, two recent incidents have raised concerns about the safety of hot air balloon flights in Mexico. The most serious occurred on April 1, 2023, in Teotihuacán, State of Mexico, when a balloon caught fire mid-flight, killing two adults and severely injuring a child. Authorities arrested the pilot, who lacked the required permits to operate. The case prompted calls for a review of regulations and safety protocols in the area, where balloon tourism is a major attraction.
Another accident happened on January 12, 2025, when a balloon took off from Teotihuacán and was blown by the wind to the municipality of Axapusco, where it was forced to make an emergency landing. Two foreign tourists were injured and taken to a hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition. Although no fatalities occurred in that case, the incident underscored the urgent need to reinforce oversight measures to ensure safe flights.

Epic. Is that a smoke trail just as he started to fall..? Rope on fire..?
Other occupants would be dead too...or incinerated - shame we couldn't have seen the impact of both the faller and the basket 😁
Id enjoy the aftermath pics vid of aftermath as well. Burning alive or jumping to your death-imagine that decision! In that confined straw basket, the heat must’ve been unbearable. Wonderful vid 💪🏼
