Germany was carrying out very preliminary tests that could have yeilded a possible nuclear weapon. They were no where near it due to taking a wrong turn with heavy water. When the US team found this out they breathed a sigh of relief as it showed Germany would never get the bomb.

This was nothing to do with some old generals not thinking the bomb was feasable. It probbly had more to do with Hitler's manic behaviour causing the cream of Germany's nuclear physicists to leave the country...

And yes, the ME 262 did stir things up but they had very poor engines due to lack of access to strategic metals for high heat tollerant materials for turbine blades etc. Which meant that they only ran for a few hours before needing to be rebuilt.

But at the same time as this, or soon after, the Brits had operational the Meteor fighter. In action in July '44. And in the US the Shooting Star was in production by late '44 with all the massive power of the US industrial system behind it.

Germany was fucked from the first shot fired in '39. The industrial base was way too small, way too disorganised and the NAZI's way too dysfunctional to in anyway prevent the US from destroying them.
