They look black from a distance. They have an iridescent colour on their feathers once you see them up close

A more serious side note: Actually.... civilization, what with all the man made structures plus the paving, are bad ass - bird poo, when dropped on the soil is an excellent fertilizer, from the Net: "Bird droppings are rich in essential nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, which are vital for plant growth. Historically, guano was highly valued as a fertilizer, with seabird guano being particularly effective due to its high concentration of nutrients. "
