I have an idea the Chinese handler did not observe the safety measures here, since we see him in close physical contact with the hippo which should be avoided (unless the extremely pissed hippo(s) smashed the fence *inside* the shelter.)

When you type " how do zoo caretakers handle hippos" into the search bar, you get a long list of safety measures that need to be observed, including this one, quote:

• Sturdy Fences: Caretakers work behind strong, reinforced barriers to prevent direct contact with the hippos, which are naturally dangerous.

Says it all. Hippos are among the most dangerous animals on earth both to humans and other animals.
So if there were no "sturdy fences" inside the shelter then the zoo would be at fault, run by idiots.
