I sometimes saw my friend watching Charlie Kirk and I always told them to stop wasting time watching him so we can watch something else because politics is boring. I now tell people to watch Charlie Kirk. I'm not very political, but I love the idea of freedom of speech, and to see someone murdered for speaking gets me angry, and seeing people celebrate this random dude's death, got me even angrier, even though I didn't give a shit about him or what he said, it pissed me off something fierce to see people celebrating the death of a random human who did nothing to deserve it. It's like killing Diogenes. I'm sure most ancient Greek political people didn't like Diogenes, but they didn't think of killing him just for being annoying to them. Society cannot be killing random people just because they speak in a way some don't like. I'm glad people are getting fired for celebrating this man's death. If they truly believe Charlie deserved to be killed for his speech they should have no problem being fired for theirs.

Controversial opinion, but I think cancel culture fucking sucks in either direction. Sure, if she called for violence I think she gets whatever she deserves. But glee at the death of Charlie, while disgusting to me personally, should not be a cancel. Either we believe in free speech, even when awful, or we dont. Thoughts?

Cancel culture does 'suck'.

We are in a culture these days similar to that of post WW1 where everyone was so into pacifism that anyone stating the obvious for example that the world is a dangerous place and we need to keep our military modern and ready would be shouted down as a warmonger.

These days it's not pacifism per say, although that is strong enough, it's concepts such as 'systemic racism', 'the western enlightenment was a colonial evil', 'global warming', 'transwomen are real women' etc etc.

If you even question this stuff in the work place (in Aus anyway) you risk your job.

We are swamped by this progressive left dystopian nightmare and my gut feeling is that if we can only 'cancel' one progressive voice then it's a victory.

I sound hypocritical saying that I know. It's how I feel on an emotional level.

Intellectually I agree with you that freedom of speech is vitally important. But we live in a world of algorythms (spelling? FFS?) where invisible programs push us to areas 'they' want us to feed from.

In the past we had newspapers and radio and TV where editors were in charge of what went to air. Now days the net is a free for all where every unhinged person can easily make up a blog/site etc that can push out disinformation that looks real. People are now less classically educated than ever before, less able to discern truth from fiction. Conspiracy theories are coming thick and fast. IE the stuff pushed by JFK Junior and amplyfied down stream.

I don't know the answers really. But something is seriously wrong...
