They are basically inland hurricanes in regards to wind and rain. Much like hurricanes they can produce tornados but not all thunderstorms produce a Derecho. This is a video I watched about 6 months ago which is a goofy meteorologist talking about the ones he has experienced and videos he took over the last 18 years, he says 20 but first one is in 2007. Some good examples of how they look on radar in the video. The 10 minute mark is a great example of when it's approaching.

Caught the tail end of this beast when it passed thru Indiana a few years ago
Been through stronger storms in Texas
Truck starts swaying....then you hear hail....then you shit your pants when you hear the roar.
But then you remember the train passes by where you parked
So you go back to sleep.....
Then you hear the sirens.
Off to the yellow brick road
When... can't remember
