Since there was a pole camera on the house, I am guessing that some law enforcement agency was looking at them for some reason. Given who showed up and what they were after, my guess is that there was some connection to drugs.

Fun fact burning alive looks worse than it is, you only feel it for about 10 seconds or so before your nerves melt and you cant even open your mouth anymore to scream, if you had air to do it that is.
