U.S. sending USS Tripoli, thousands of Marines to Middle East

Mar 13 2026

"Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is sending an amphibious assault ship, the USS Tripoli, and its Marine expeditionary unit to the Middle East, a senior U.S. official confirmed to Axios on Friday.

Why it matters: The deployment will add thousands of Marines, several warships, and F-35 fighter jets to support those already in the region, the U.S. official said.

The U.S. official said U.S. Central Command asked for the new force in order to have more options for military operations against Iran.
The Marine expeditionary unit will be able to conduct ground operations if ordered. The U.S. official declined to comment on that possibility.

Driving the news: The Marine expeditionary force is moving into the region as Iran continues to target traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, driving up global oil, shipping and insurance prices.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday that U.S. Navy escorts for commercial ships in the Strait could begin "soon."
Bessent said the disruptions have already cost the U.S. $11 billion.
Sources with knowledge said that before such escorts would begin, the U.S. military is planning potential operations for taking out land-based anti-ship missiles that the Iranians have deployed in the Strait area.

13 U.S. military members have died in the conflict as of Friday, following the crash of a refueling tanker aircraft in Iraq.

What they're saying: "We're on plan to defeat, destroy, disable all of their meaningful military capabilities at a pace the world has never seen before," Hegseth insisted in a news conference Friday.

"But it's not just that Iran doesn't have a functioning Air Force, or that their entire Navy is at the bottom of the Persian Gulf, or their missile force is shrinking daily."

"They also don't have the ability to build more. That's the most important component I'd like to emphasize today," he said.
Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Dan Caine said that U.S. Central Command will continue to "destroy the Iranian Navy to ensure freedom of navigation, and this means going after Iran's mine-laying capability and destroying their ability to attack commercial vessels."

Zoom in: The entire Tripoli Expeditionary Strike Group includes the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, the USS Tripoli, guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls, and guided-missile destroyer USS Rafael Peralta.

The Pentagon did not respond to Axios' request for comment." Source

Well, still come shit to take care of, after all. Maybe the Marines being sent are going to storm this island...who knows, Trump has already said they surrendered...maybe they have to do it a few times.

President Trump tells G7 leaders Iran is “about to surrender.”

Mar 13 2026

"President Donald Trump told the leaders of the world’s seven largest economies in a private virtual meeting on Wednesday that Iran was “about to surrender,” hours before Tehran released its new supreme leader’s first public statement vowing to keep fighting, open new fronts in the war, and use the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic weapon indefinitely.

The explosive gap between what Trump told allied leaders in private and what Iran’s government said publicly within 24 hours of that call has produced one of the starkest credibility tests of the entire fourteen-day conflict, and it arrives on the same day that United States intelligence agencies have privately concluded that the Iranian regime is not at risk of imminent collapse.

Three officials from G7 countries briefed on the contents of the Wednesday call told Axios that Trump boasted about the results of Operation Epic Fury, telling allied leaders: “I got rid of a cancer that was threatening us all.”

At the same time, Trump acknowledged a fundamental problem with his own surrender claim, telling the assembled leaders: “Nobody knows who is the leader, so there is no one that can announce surrender.”

The White House declined to comment on the Axios report.

What Trump Told the G7. And What Iran Said the Next Morning.

Trump was described by sources as “ambiguous and noncommittal” on his objectives and timeline for ending the war. Some participants left the call believing he wants to wind the conflict down. Others felt the complete opposite. Trump said the main question he is working through is timing, gave no deadline, but said “we need to finish the job” to avoid another war with Iran in five years." I love A-10's, but damn, I want one of these on my balcony...just change the caliber to 9mm...

The US C-RAM air defense gun:
C-RAM was rapidly developed to take the CIWS on to a land-based platform with the US Army. The C-RAM can fire up to 4,500 rounds per minute, with typically 300 rounds used per engagement at 27 dollars a round, making $8,100 dollars the total cost per engagement. (In 2022 dollars)

the C-RAM uses the 20mm HEIT-SD (high-explosive incendiary tracer, self-destruct) ammunition, originally developed for the M163 Vulcan Air Defense System. These rounds explode on impact with the target, or on tracer burnout, thereby greatly reducing the risk of collateral damage from rounds that fail to hit their target. Some source

Trump calls on UK and others to send warships to Strait of Hormuz

President Trump has threatened to "wipe out" the oil infrastructure on Kharg Island should Tehran prevent the passage of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Mar 13-14 2026

"Writing on Truth Social, President Trump said the US will be sending warships "to keep the Strait open and safe".

He said: "Many Countries, especially those who are affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the Hormuz Strait, will be sending War Ships, in conjunction with the United States of America, to keep the Strait open and safe.

"We have already destroyed 100% of Iran’s Military capability, but it’s easy for them to send a drone or two, drop a mine, or deliver a close range missile somewhere along, or in, this Waterway, no matter how badly defeated they are."

President Trump called on China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and others "that are affected by this artificial constraint" to send ships to the area.

He added that in the meantime, the US will be "bombing the hell out of the shoreline, and continually shooting Iranian Boats and Ships out of the water".

"One way or the other, we will soon get the Hormuz Strait OPEN, SAFE, and FREE," he said.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence told Sky News: "As we've said previously, we are currently discussing with our allies and partners a range of options to ensure the security of shipping in the region."

The Joint Maritime Information Centre said there had been at least 20 incidents involving shipping and offshore infrastructure in the Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman since March 1.

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for oil and gas tankers, usually sees 138 ships a day pass through, but that has declined to about five due to the threat of attack.

Trump Pressures NATO Allies and China for Warships to Guard Oil Shipments

Mar 15-16 2026

"A day after calling on other countries to send warships to end the de facto Iranian blockade of the economically vital Strait of Hormuz, President Trump turned up the pressure on them to agree.

“If there’s no response or if it’s a negative response, I think it will be very bad for the future of NATO,” he told The Financial Times in a short interview on Sunday. In the interview, Mr. Trump suggested that China, too, should send warships to help secure the gulf.

His comments come as fears have been rising about the global economic fallout from the war in Iran and its stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz — through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes. Earlier in the day, the U.S. energy secretary, Chris Wright, acknowledged in a televised interview that there were “no guarantees” that oil prices would fall in the coming weeks.

International oil prices have continued to push higher, rising past $106 a barrel, up more than 3 percent in early trading, though that rise is more muted than some investors expected.

Foreign governments have responded to the idea of sending warships to the strait with caution, if at all. And Iran is allowing Chinese ships through the strait, so leaders in Beijing have little incentive to send in its naval power.

As the war continued into its third week, there was no end to the fighting in sight. In the early hours of Monday in the Middle East, airstrikes again hit the Iranian capital, Tehran, including at an airport. Residents reported the sound of huge explosions. In Beirut, the Lebanese capital, the sound of airstrikes and thunder mingled indistinguishably in the first hour of Monday morning. And the authorities in Dubai said “a drone-related incident" in the vicinity of its international airport had damaged a fuel tank and caused a fire. The airport is normally among the world’s busiest but it has contended with multiple drone attacks in recent weeks.

The danger continued across the broader region. Iraqi officials said four people had been injured in a missile attack on Baghdad International Airport on Sunday that was claimed by a powerful Iranian-backed Iraqi militia, Kataib Hezbollah, which previously said it was responsible for an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad last week. Saudi Arabia said it had intercepted drones near its capital and in an eastern province, although officials did not say where they had originated.

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, told CBS News on Sunday that the country was “ready to defend ourselves as long as it takes” and denied Mr. Trump’s claim a day earlier that Iran wanted to make a deal. “We never asked for a cease-fire, and we have never asked even for negotiation,” he said.

Mr. Araghchi said on Telegram that the Strait of Hormuz was “open to everyone, except American ships and those of its allies.” In practice, however, the oil shipped through the passage comes from either Iran or American allies such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Mr. Wright told ABC’s “This Week” that the United States needed to destroy Iran’s military capabilities, including those that threaten the strait. “You will see the straits open again in the not-too-distant future,” he said.

Death toll: At least 1,348 civilians in Iran have been killed since the start of the war, Iran’s U.N. representative told the Security Council on Wednesday, the latest figure the country has provided. In Lebanon, officials said that 850 people had been killed. And in Israel at least 12 people have been killed, according to the authorities." Source
