If I ever start measuring thefts to determine whether it’s valid for victims to get angry, I’ll certainly have lost a considerable number of brain cells.

But simply using the phrase "You can't even steal" already puts me on shaky moral ground.

He means in regard to the item being stolen being disproportionate to the actual punishment, and that people just want any excuse to inflict violence. Therefore stealing a little candy for example would be enough reason for them to become tribal and kill a person.

This is Brazil; people only stay in jail—*maybe*—for murder. For robbery, they get out the same day and keep right on stealing... People do this to get a sense of justice, since the state only ever delivers impunity. I thought that was obvious, but apparently not.

It’s not unprovoked aggression; the guy is a thief and was in the middle of a robbery. The locals took action, since nobody else does anything about it.
