A 25-year-old man, identified as Guilherme Santos, died this Tuesday afternoon (7th) following an exchange of gunfire at a mattress store on Rebouças Avenue, in Sumaré (São Paulo state). The information was confirmed by Civil Police Chief Marcelo Moreschi Ribeiro.
According to the police chief, Guilherme was shot while attempting to rob the establishment. The case has been registered as homicide and attempted robbery.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Paulo Salgado, commander of the 48th Military Police (PM) Battalion, at around 12:00 p.m., employees saw the suspect attempting to rob the store, lay on the floor, and called the police.
However, the store owner, identified as Vinícius Baumgartner, owned a registered and legal firearm as a licensed CAC (Collector, Sports Shooter, and Hunter) and reacted to the robbery. An exchange of gunfire ensued.
Also according to the lieutenant colonel, the business owner suffered a hand injury and was taken to the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in the Macarenko neighborhood, but is doing well.
Meanwhile, the suspect was hit by three gunshots and taken to the Sumaré State Hospital (HES). He succumbed to his injuries and died.
According to the Civil Police, the owner will not be arrested or charged at the scene because he acted in self-defense.
In addition to those involved in the shootout, there is a second suspect believed to have participated in the attempted robbery. The man was reportedly on a motorcycle, waiting for his accomplice to leave with the stolen goods.
"This other individual was outside wearing a helmet, got on the motorcycle, and fled riding against traffic. One of our patrol cars attempted to pursue him, but was unsuccessful. We will likely carry out operations to locate and identify this second suspect," Salgado stated.
