The Morbid Reality of Kids Suffering for Olympic Gold

It’s a horrible sight to see, but with the Rio Olympics coming up in 2016 these pictures are a timely reminder of the abuse some children suffer in the race to become an elite athlete.

Many of these photos are from the Nanning Gymnasium in Nanning, China, known as one of the most harsh training camps in the country. As harrowing as these pictures are, astonishingly, parents willingly send their children there to learn how to become Olympic champions.

Kids in China start training incredibly young, from around 5 or 6-years-old.

It wasn’t just leading up to Beijing 2008 that the abuse happened either, Reuters reported that it was still going on for the last Olympics held in London in 2012. “The whole-nation system is disastrous. The budding young talents are shut up in closed training schools from a young age and apart from their own events, almost have no other life skills.” Reuters quote a user on China’s microblogging site Sina Weibo.

The Chinese see their elite sport programme, part of the Communist “juguo tizhi” or “whole nation system”, as a way to boost national pride and build confidence.

I would post more pictures but for some reason - even tho it's SFW - it may be way too disturbing to view so here is the link to the whole thing. http://www.smash.com/grim-photos-abuse-suffered-children-training-become-olympic-athletes/

This is freaking insane. And for what??? I don't remember the names of China's gold winners. Hell, I don't know the names of the U.S.'s gold winners. What is it all for? Bragging rights? "National confidence"? I'm sure as the Chinese plug along in appalling poverty, pollution and disease, they think "but at least we won the gold medal!"

I dont agree with any of the above. Reason being, picture of a child crying does not mean "abuse". Make no mistake, a child will cry in certain conditions (forced to study, forced to contend with what their parents decide like gifts etc). So the whole premise of young children in "pain" as shown in the pictures does good only propaganda purposes. These training will no doubt make them men/women of steel and substance one day.

You are the one who made the "attack". Therefore, according to "forum etiquette" it is up to you to explain or I'm done.
Hah!!! Sorry, that made me laugh. Anyway, the so-called "attack" was aimed directly at your vicous ignorance regarding the world around you. At least get your facts right first before your sputter your words. So, moving on, here are my arguments:

  1. UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon awarded on behalf of the 193 member states reunited under the banner of the United Nations Parliamentary Assembly it’s first honorary title to the country judged best of the world in 2014 to the People’s Republic of China which the panel of judges from every country of the world elected to be the best country in most categories such as health, education and the economy.
  2. WCA (World Countries Award) 2015 Winners List:

    • Best Country in the World: China
    • Most Beautiful Capital City In The World: Beijing
    • Best Food in the World: Chinese food
    • Nicest People on Earth: Chinese people
    • Smartest people on the Planet: Chinese people
    • Most Handsome Men in the World: Chinese men
    • Most Beautiful Women In The World: Chinese women
    • Most Humble Human Being on the Planet: The Chinese
Now, the above might not mean significant in terms of economy ...... but it actually does. The citizens make the country. So the better the people, the better the country is governed.
  3. Huge fucking economy!
  4. Huge fucking military!

And yet, poverty continues to be a serious concern. Let me guess. You're Chinese. I live in the U.S. and although there are many great things about the U.S., I don't hide my head in the sand about its problems. I suggest you open your eyes.

Best country in the world et al? Where did you get that? The Chinese tourism website?

hah! Hollywood much?? Ok dude tell me on what basis did u derive that China is impoverished?

First of all, I didn't mean to imply that ALL of China is impoverished. If you wouldn't have come at me like a rabid dog (which also is a problem in China), I would have explained that. Second, I'm not a dude. Third, China continues to have a problem with poverty, despite an upward mobility in economics. Although millions are now living a better quality of life than they were before, there's a bigger disparity in the income gap, especially in rural areas versus urban areas.

But don't feel bad. The U.S. has the same problem.

So, female dude then. Isnt marginal poverty prevalent in every country? The US has its own share of poverty stricken state i.e. Detroit, New Orleans hello!! or are you gonna sweep them under the rugs?

Yes, it is. I mentioned that in my post. And the poor of China, as they go along in poverty, pollution and disease, can take some comfort in the fact that they might win the gold.

1. Poverty = We have already established that US has its own share of impoverished states, so your argument is invalid.
2. Pollution = As of 2014, US share of carbon footprints in the world is 16% against the rest of world's share of 38.4%. CO2 emissions equals 17.3 metric.
Yet you have the gall.

Well, since you won't let it go...I looked up your article. Check out what else it said: "China is also known for it’s thriving organ harvesting industry which employs more then 2 million people." Doesn't that sound spurious to you? I went directly to the United Nations Website www.un.org and found nothing of the sort.

As for the pollution:

edit: That quote is a direct copy/paste. And I just noticed it even has a misspelling/bad grammar i.e. then instead of than. I now think it's totally bogus.
