Man falls into geothermal basin

Man reportedly falls into hot spring at Yellowstone

June 7, 2016
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Rangers searched Tuesday for a man who reportedly fell into a hot spring at Yellowstone National Park.

Someone reported seeing a man in his early 20s walk off the boardwalk in the Norris Geyser Basin area and fall into the thermal spring about 225 yards away. Rangers said the man probably died because he has not been located, and searchers are being extra cautious because of the spring's dangerous thermal features.

No other information was released, and a call to the park's communications office was not immediately returned Tuesday evening.

The Norris Geyser Basin is the hottest and most dynamic thermal area in Yellowstone, which features springs that can reach temperatures close to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tuesday's search comes on the heels of several other high-profile incidents at the park.

On Saturday, a 13-year-old boy was burned around his ankle and foot after his father, who had been carrying him, slipped in the park's Upper Geyser Basin hot spring.

In May, a Canadian film crew was accused of leaving an established boardwalk and stepping onto a geothermal feature where they snapped photos and took video of themselves.

Also last month, another Canadian man loaded a bison calf into his SUV because he thought it was cold. The calf later had to be euthanized because it could not be reunited with its herd.

In April, park officials warned people against approaching wildlife in the park after a woman was caught on video petting a bison.

I think it's time for Yellowstone to put in their advertising that people are visiting A FUCKING VOLCANO!

Most people understand that but not 'geothermal activity.'

And when you visit for sightseeing you are walking on the caldera of the world's biggest and most active volcano.
Duh it's gonna be hot!
If it wasn't venting, you know making those pretty pools along the boardwalk, taking a selfie would be your last worry.

Update--Thursday,6/9/2016.
The news release today said rangers at the park attempted to get close to the area where the man fell in, to recover his body, but were unable to because of the heat and extreme danger of it. Boiling water is under the very thin crust and you cannot tell if it will support weight or not.

So this guy is cooked for sure. At least the little critters that can live in those pools will have a treat for a few days.
I wonder how long he lasted after he fell in? I bet it was the most painful thing he ever experienced, for sure it was the last.

I remember reading a few stories some years ago about other Darwin winners suffering the same fate.

Three people who had worked there for a summer jumped in and were injured with over 90% of their bodies suffering 3rd degree burns. One died.

And in 1981 a guy tried to save his friends dog who had jumped in. He dove in headfirst and suffered 3rd degree burns to 100% of his body. Both boiled like a frothy soup. After he was recovered, friends trying to help took his boot off and his skin came off with it. He died the next day.

The skin is literally boiled off and sloughs away at the slightest touch, making it one hell of a shitty way to die.

If anyone can find pictures would love to see them!

Guy would of been in hot water with the rangers anyway if they had caught him walking around there. He must of been a bit crazy...

I've been to Yellowstone many times, and seen on more than one occasion people taking risks when we visited, and they included individuals trying to jump over these bubbling pools of boiling water. That area is scary when you walk by it on the boardwalk. Either he was pretty damn stupid or suicidal.

I've heard, they're throwing a bucket full of soap into the gusher to activate it, when the visitors are there.
Did you saw that?

Yeah I heard about the bison calf, after the man took it, the mother rejected the calf so they had to put it down :/
