The US shot down this "object' with a $400,000 Sidewinder AIM-9X air to air missile. That's right a 400,000 dollar missile. But wait, it gets better....
The pilot missed the target, which was basically moving at a snails pace, with the first 400,000 dollar Sidewinder AIM'9X. Reckon that AIM part stands for sumptin important?
...and THEY CAN'T FIND THE DAMN THING TO RETRIEVE IT.
Close to a cool million spent... wonder who the missile that missed went to live with.

Press secretary says ain't no aliens or extraterrestrials out there being shot down. Soooo not UFO's, not foreign aircraft... just "objects". They are really reaching with this look over there moment. It's pathetic to the point of funny, but mostly just pathetic.

I defuse to believe that this is possible.. murica

Snowden calls UFO craze a distraction

Talk of aliens intends to misdirect from real scandals, the NSA whistleblower says

The media frenzy over “spy balloons” and unidentified flying objects over North America is sadly not about first contact with extraterrestrials, but an engineered panic for political misdirection, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden said on Monday.
“It’s not aliens. I wish it were aliens. But it’s not aliens. It’s just the ol’ engineered panic, an attractive nuisance ensuring [national security] reporters get assigned to investigate balloon bulls**t rather than budgets or bombings” such as the Nord Stream, Snowden tweeted.
Award-winning investigative journalist Seymour Hersh published a story last week describing how the US and Norway blew up the pipelines transporting Russian natural gas to Germany last September. The US government denounced it as false.
Over the next several days, the US military began shooting down “objects” in the sky over North America. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on Monday that the US government still doesn’t know who owns the three objects brought down over the weekend. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said there was “no indication of aliens or extraterrestrial activity,” however.

Kirby had announced the downing of a “high-altitude object” off the coast of Alaska on Friday. US fighter jets brought down an “unidentified, unmanned object” over the Yukon in northwest Canada on Saturday. The third object was shot down on Sunday afternoon over Lake Huron as it approached Michigan.
“While authorities don’t yet know what the objects are, they are not a threat,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters on Monday. “They do not present a military threat to anyone on the ground. They do however present a risk to civil aviation and potentially an intelligence collection threat. And we’ll get to the bottom of it,” he added.
Austin also said the three objects were different from the Chinese ‘spy balloon’ the US shot down over South Carolina last week. The aerostat, which Beijing described as a weather balloon blown off-course by the winds, had passed over most of the continental US before it was destroyed by a F-22 fighter jet.

The Pentagon’s reluctance to describe the ‘objects’ or show any debris that may have been recovered has fueled speculation about their potential extraterrestrial origin. Space magnate Elon Musk joked about “friends of mine” stopping by. Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers have expressed frustration at the lack of official explanations by the White House.
Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who sits on the Homeland Security Committee, demanded the Pentagon and the president “tell us what they know – and what they don’t – immediately.”
“What in the world is going on?”
wondered fellow Kentuckian and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on the Senate floor. “The administration has still not been able to divulge any meaningful information about what was shot down,” he said, asking if the radar sensitivity may have been turned up after the Chinese balloon incident.

Thanks, Gaius. The link wasn't working for me as well and I first thought it's the EU crap again. But Jiz is in the UK.

An “unidentified object” [the fourth in a week] was shot down Sunday for the third time in as many days, this time over Lake Huron, after earlier ones in Alaska and Canada, U.S. officials said. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., tweeted that “the object has been downed by pilots from the U.S. Air Force and National Guard.” The shootdown was confirmed by two U.S. officials. U.S. and Canadian authorities had restricted some airspace over the lake earlier Sunday as planes were scrambled to intercept and try to identify the object.

The news comes as U.S. officials were still trying to precisely identify the other two objects blown from the sky [aside from the Chinese Spy Balloon] by F-22 fighter jets over the past two days, and were working to determine whether China was responsible as concerns escalate about what Washington says is Beijing’s large-scale aerial surveillance program.

The object shot down Saturday over the Yukon was described by U.S. officials as a balloon significantly smaller than the three school bus-size balloon hit by a missile Feb. 4 while drifting off the South Carolina coast after traversing the country. A flying object brought down over the remote northern coast of Alaska on Friday was more cylindrical and described as a type of airship.

Both were believed to have a payload, either attached or suspended from them, according to the officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation. Officials were not able to say who launched the objects and were seeking to figure out their origin.

U.S. officials said the two more recent objects were much smaller in size, different in appearance and flew at lower altitudes than the suspected Chinese spy balloon that fell into the Atlantic Ocean after the U.S. missile strike. They said the Alaska and Canada objects were not consistent with the fleet of Chinese aerial surveillance balloons that targeted more than 40 countries, stretching back at least into the Trump administration.

That large white orb first appeared over the U.S. in late January, and since then Americans have been fixated on the sky above them. U.S. authorities made clear that they constantly monitor for unknown radar blips, and it is not unusual to shut down airspace as a precaution to evaluate them.

On Sunday, the U.S. briefly closed the airspace over Lake Michigan; on Saturday night, that was done over rural Montana. Officials Sunday said they were no longer tracking any objects over those locations.

Some more about balloons and objects...and Russians...

OTTAWA — After days of shooting down unidentified “objects,” fighter jets from Canada and the United States were scrambled Monday night to intercept four Russian military aircraft as they buzzed North American airspace. The North American Aerospace Defence Command, which detected the group comprised of Russian long-range bombers and fighter escorts as it approached Alaska, painted the incident as a normal occurrence that did not pose any threat.

Norad also dismissed the Russian flight as unrelated to the string of suspected balloons shot down in the skies over North America, even as the search for wreckage from those objects continued in central Yukon and Lake Huron on Tuesday. A second “object” was destroyed over central Yukon on Saturday, and a third over Lake Huron on Sunday. Officials have said little about these objects, though Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicated on Tuesday that they are balloons.

The appearance of Russian military aircraft near Alaska comes after an American fighter jet shot down what officials have described as an “object,” but which increasingly appears to have been a balloon, off the state’s northeastern coast on Friday.

“What we’re seeing is there’s a range of different balloons that seem to be in different sizes and different numbers,” he told reporters before meeting with cabinet ministers on Parliament Hill.

Officials were also still trying to pinpoint where the object went down in Lake Huron. An American jet fighter destroyed it with a second missile after its first missed on Sunday, the U.S. military’s top commander, Gen. Mark Milley, told reporters in Brussels.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Feb. 14, 2023.

Wow... expensive Sidewinder AIMs for balloons! (as @deviant2 has already stated before) What might the reason be not to shoot with the 20mm Gatlings?
On the other hand, costs seem to be not so important for them; in war, they shot Hellfires at snipers (in a building) These missiles are made for destruction and it works well.

I want a weather balloon for the 'DCS World' flight simulation to try it out. Maybe someone has already made a mod, I have to look now.

This is starting to become really farcical.

The US has become a laughing stock. For many reasons, and having a geriatric president who likely wears adult diapers isn't helping

weather balloons are equipped with parachutes for emergency pourposes. and this balloon didnt appear to have one. maybe china doesnt use them on theirs? idk...
also,if its a balloon that, "veered of course because it was caught in a wind stream",wouldnt you think china would call up the president of the country their aircraft is heading toward? letting them know something went awry? because now tensions are higher than ever between the states and china because of this stupid shit! china wants their shit back, and the states are telling them to wish in one hand and shit in the other and see which fills first.
again... diversion. something is about to happen. maybe a war with russia and not china. because russia is still pulling their shit with fly-by's and their under water antics just the same. AND our involvement with the war. not to mention, were fucking with their natural gas lines for production to get gas to germany.
unless this will be something internal. maybe our govt will pull another 9/11 type stunt.

Agreed. Limits are being pushed to the breaking point. There's a sense of dread, cause something is coming and it ain't gonna be pretty. Every seat in our country is filled with corrupt people covering for each other. Only two years it's taken them to run us into the ground and we have no power to stop them.
I loathe every single one of them for shitting on everything that makes our country what it is.
Ruined from the inside out by our own government.
