(CNN) -- An Indiana man told police he "messed up" by killing a woman in Hammond, then came clean, leading them to several more bodies in nearby Gary, Hammond Police Chief John Doughty said Monday.

Doughty stopped short of calling Darren Deon Vann a suspected serial killer, but left the possibility open if police are able to connect the convicted sex offender to any of the six women found in Gary over the weekend.

"If we directly attach him to it, we can make that assumption," he said, adding that Vann's statements lead authorities to believe there are "possible other victims." Some cases may date back 20 years, based on what Vann has told police, the chief said.

Text messages would be Vann's undoing, Doughty said.

Vann, 43, ordered a prostitute through the backpage.com site serving Chicago and arranged a Friday meeting at a Motel 6 in Hammond with Afrikka Hardy, 19, the chief said.

The person who arranged the meeting, whom Doughty described only as "a facilitator," later texted Hardy and received "suspicious texts" she believed were from Vann, the chief said.

She and another person went the motel to check on Hardy, according to a probable cause affidavit. They found her body in a bathtub.

Using a phone number provided by the facilitator, police electronically tracked Vann down, the chief said. Vann told police he "messed up" and expressed surprise that he was found so quickly, Doughty said.

"He admitted his involvement in the Hammond incident" and began leading police to other bodies in Gary, Doughty said, adding that at this point, Vann is charged in only Hardy's death.

According to the affidavit, police found signs of a possible struggle in the motel room: a broken fingernail on the floor, a button from a shirt, and the beds moved away from the headboards.

A former boyfriend of Hardy remembered her as an terrific person and friend. Michael Moore said they had dated in high school and continued to keep in touch.

"She was a really loving person. She was very funny, very outgoing. She always was pretty lively," he said. "It's crazy because, I mean, she was really -- she was an amazing person."
Seven women total

told CNN affiliate WSBT that he believes the crimes occurred recently.

"Somebody had to come in there like last week or something, because (Northern Indiana Public Service Company) and the water company were there turning off the power and stuff, so there was no one in there," Justin Jones said.

Vann has a record

Anith Jones, 35, of Merrillville, was one of the victims, a mayor's spokeswoman says.

Darren Vann led authorities to several bodies in Indiana, police say.
The Indiana-born Vann is a convicted sex offender from Austin, Texas, police said. Records show was arrested on unspecified charges while living in Cherry Point, North Carolina, in 1993.

He was convicted of aggravated rape in 2009 from a 2007 case, the Austin Police Department said in a statement. After serving five years in jail, he left for Indiana in June 2013, police said.

Vann is not a registered sex offender in Austin.

The police department there said detectives would be conducting a review of potentially related cases, asking anyone with information to contact its missing person and homicide cold case units.

Vann also had a conviction in Lake County, Indiana, that was "not in the sex offender category," Mayor Freeman-Wilson said.

Court records show Vann was accused of breaking and entering and intimidation in 2004.

"He certainly was cooperative. He led (police) to the locations of these bodies. Whether he was eager or not, I'm not in a position to say that," she said.

Several police agencies are now working the case, which could grow larger and expand to at least one other state, the mayor said.

The bodies of seven women found over the weekend in northwest Indiana have been linked to an unidentified possible serial killer who is in police custody and led authorities to at least three of the bodies, officials said Monday.

The women were found throughout Hammond and Gary, according to the Lake County coroner's office. The Chicago Sun-Times cited police sources saying the man in custody is a 43-year-old resident of Gary. Hammond Chief John Doughty said police will have more information at a press conference Monday at noon local time, but said the man gave police information on three other dead women, all in Gary. Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. called the person of interest a “serial killer” in a Facebook post Sunday afternoon and said he has “admitted to a couple of homicides in Hammond,” that date back to 1994 or 1995. He also said in his posts that the man is a convicted sex offender. Reports said the man was convicted of sex crimes in Texas.

"The suspect Hammond arrested for the Motel 6 murder is an admitted serial killer," McDermott wrote. "The suspect gave up the location of a body in Gary that was confirmed found where he said it would be."

The flurry of grisly discoveries began when Hammond police responded to a call of an unresponsive person Friday evening at a Motel 6 and found the strangled body of a woman identified as Afrika Hardy, 19. As part of the investigation into her death, police executed a search warrant on a home in Gary, where they also took the person of interest into custody, Hammond Police Lt. Richard Hoyda told the Chicago Tribune in an email.

The man, whose name is being withheld pending charges, later confessed, Hoyda said, and told police where to find three other dead women, all in Gary. Police discovered the body of Anith Jones, 35, of Merrillville, around 11:20 p.m. Saturday in an abandoned home in Gary. Her family had reported her missing on Oct. 8.

Jones' sister, Yolanda Nowell, previously described her as “very street savvy” and said she had moved 10 years ago from Chicago to Indiana, where she operated a stand at a nearby flea market.

Police found the next body around 1 a.m. Sunday and a third body less than an hour later, according to the Tribune.

Late Sunday, the coroner's office confirmed the discovery of three additional Jane Does, all of which were found in Gary. The city is ten miles from Hammond.

All seven deaths have been ruled homicides, according to the coroner's office. Most of the bodies were found in or around abandoned or fire-damaged homes in blighted neighborhoods, according to reports. The house near where Jones was found was described as being located in a thriving neighborhood, although it is unkempt, with overgrown grass and weeds.

A spokesman for the coroner's office said Monday that Hardy and Jones died of ligature strangulation. The corner was conducting autopsies on the other bodies. "We're actually doing the forensic work, carefully identifying with clothing or any tattoos," the spokesman said.

In a statement, Gary Police Cpl. Gabrielle King sought to ease apprehension in the gritty city of 78,000, noting that the man is in custody and that Gary and Hammond police are working together to bring charges.

“We would like to dispel the rumor that there is a serial killer on the loose,” the statement read. “There is a 43-year-old man in the custody of The Hammond Police Department, who led officials to 3 deceased female victims who has claimed responsibility for their demise. Gary Police are closely working with Hammond Police to assist in covering every area of the investigation needed to pursue charges as expeditiously as possible. “

Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and Gary Chief Larry McKinley in a joint statement asked for calm and patience.

“We commend the officers for their work thus far and ask the citizens to remain calm and patient as our teams work this investigation and do what they do best,” their statement said.

More than likely.
I thought you might enjoy reading about this guy. It has been a little while since we've had a new serial killer.

I had already had him brought to my attention, but any new info be sure to update please :rose: as I'm sure it will be on the news in the USA and not a word here, though I'll be keeping my peepers peeled.

Exhaustipated
  • I don't know the exact number. I've never come across a definitive number anywhere. In general, experts now concede 22% of US serial killers are black. This is considerably above their percentage of the general US population (12%).

The list below may be of some use. Unfortunately the original compiler did not seem to be aware that spree killers and serial killers are different types. Also, I don't believe it is by any means comprehensive. Note, it includes some black serial killers from outside the US...

    Black Serial/Mass/Spree Killer List:

Reminds me of the Long Island serial killer(Gilgo Beach Killer or the Seashore Serial Killer)..this guy also targetted women in the sex industry... (hookers/escorts)... It's believed that he does not live in the state rather visits during the holidays.... Indiana is not too far from NY...

Fantasic

Walking talking contradiction
Not too many black serial killers.
Look forward to the true-crime book that is sure to be written.
Not really. I think mainly historically black serial killers just haven't been publicized as much.
During the last century the US statistics are basically 50% white and 40% black and 6% hispanic.
Taking the US demographics into account which are as of 2010 72% white and 12% black and 5% Asian and It's a very erroneous popular idea that African Americans are not serial killers.
