It's impossible to know how many people there actually are but i'd say that number seems low, I think there is about 15 billion at least.

If life expectancy weren't so high, 8 Billion wouldn't be such an issue but because it is, I'm sure the cull will continue until the population gets back down to ~3.5 Billion unless some human figures out how to better sustain a J-shaped population curve. The sustainable limit of human beings this planet can accommodate is ~7.7 billion.
