I remember in the 2003 blackout when all the adults were saying "it's going to be like 1977!" I had no idea what they were talking about. It turned out not to be like 1977. 1977 was violent but 2003 was peaceful. The 70's were just overall a more tumultuous time, the early 2000's were comparatively stable (despite the terrorist attacks and wars). I think it really just came down to the stabilizing race relations, early 2000's was likely the closest this nation came to not necessarily burying the race wars of the past, but simply not mentioning them. Also the recent 9/11 attacks had united NYC and ironically stabilized the population, likely due to a psycological phenomenon called Collective Trauma. I remember the 2003 NYC blackout being an extremely fun day/night. We kids got massive free icecream sundaes from the icecream store because they had to give it all away before it melted. And everyone played outside since the AC and TVs weren't working. Candles lit the stoops and porches. It was like going back in time to the 1800's.

We lived in the south bronx during the 70's. That was the 1st year we got a brand new color TV.
