Apartment complex explodes as firefighters were investigating a smoking transformer in Tacoma, Washington (at the Spanish Hills Apartments complex, June 28).
Firefighters responded around 5:37 p.m. after receiving reports of smoke coming from an electrical conduit or malfunctioning transformer. About 20 minutes later, while firefighters were investigating the area, a significant explosion occurred.
The transformer issue caused smoke to spread into multiple buildings, but there was no active structural fire initially. It happened inside a wall, blowing out particle board, debris, and windows and damaging a patio and door. No serious injuries have been reported.
