More on this case

The incident began when Tarti went to the Air Biak River, Fogi Village, Kepala Madan District, South Buru, Wednesday (12/3) at 08.20 WIT. The victim was at the river with three of her friends to pick water spinach.

"A woman was killed by a crocodile," said South Buru Police Chief, AKBP M Agung Gumilar to detikcom , Wednesday (12/3/2025).

Agung said the victim and her friend initially picked water spinach on the left side of the river bank. After that, the victim and her friend crossed the river by swimming.

"The victim and three friends crossed the river to pick vegetables on the right side of the river. When crossing the river, the victim was at the back (swimming)," he explained.

Agung said the victim suddenly shouted for help from her friend while in the middle of the river. The victim's friend named Wati Titawael (43) then tried to help the victim.

"The victim shouted 'help me first, I'm already in danger. The victim's position at that time, was helped because he was almost drowning in the middle of the river," he explained.

However, Wati was unable to pull the victim to the edge of the river. Wati, who was afraid of drowning, finally let go of the victim's hand and continued swimming to the edge of the river.

"Wati pulled the victim to the river bank, but because he was so heavy, Wati was also afraid of drowning and let go of the victim's hand. After that (Wati) swam to the river bank," explained Agung.

Wati and her friend who were on the riverbank witnessed the victim being attacked by a crocodile in the river. They then reported the incident to the residents in the village.

"The victim's friend immediately ran to the village to inform and ask for help from the villagers. After searching for more than two hours, the victim was finally found dead and evacuated to the house," he added.

Agung added that this incident has occurred twice in the past week. His party will also hold a meeting with residents and the local government as a preventive measure.

"The South Buru Police will invite a meeting of the local government and related agencies to design mitigation efforts. It is hoped that in the future there will be no more fatalities," he added.

Don't blame the croc. He has been around for millions of years and is just doing his part in nature. Humans should stop being hunter gatherers and get with it. Shame on Indonesian or whatever piss poor South East Asian country for exposing its citizens to such danger. In the crocs defense he mistook the girl for a fellow reptilian and was merely trying to mate with her given the leaders in every country are lizard people, it's unfortunate the common homo sapien underlings often get mistaken for one in these backwaters of beyond. Not like it's Australia where even the common folk are now largely reptilian.
