Serious ED Hospital Wait Times - Our Healthcare System is Broken

Fuck me, this is insane!

A little context, metro Calgary has a population of ~1.5 million people and served by the following hospitals:
-Foothills Medical Centre located in the NW part of Calgary, is the biggest hospital in the region and only Level 1 trauma centre in the city. It has a very large quite modern emerg department. I would (and have) gone here for care.
-Peter Lougheed Centre is in the NE part of the city which is mostly a great big ghetto filled with lots of east indians, darkies and white trash. Its emerg is a shithole. I would not go here as its crowded, old, dirty and gets a lot of horrible clientele.
-Rockyview Hospital is in the SW, mid-sized facility and reasonably modern emerg. I would go here if it wasn't a particularly serious issue.
-South Health Campus is in the far SE, newest hospital in the region so quite nice & clean. It serves a large part of the city as well as much of the southern part of the province.
-The Sheldon Chumir Centre is downtown, an urgent care facility meaning no overnight admits, a place to go if you have a boo-boo, broken limb, etc.
-The other facilities in surrounding smaller towns are also just urgent care and with the exception of the one in Airdrie not open 24 hours.
-The screen grab was taken at 11:00 pm on Saturday night. So before the witching hour and the bars close, all the drunks hit the streets, start getting into fights, driving like assholes, etc. Its likely that ambulances are currently being diverted to the Lougheed, Rockyview & SHC in anticipation for the inevitable surge of traffic that will come >2:00 am and end up at the Foothills.

I realize that this is quite local and probably not of interest to most people on Goregrish, I was just stunned at some of the wait times. Its not unusual to see times >4 hours at all of these hospitals any time of the day, tonight happens to be particularly bad. Canada has socialized medicine which while free (not really since we're taxed out the ass to the point our rectums could make it to @Rick James' thread) and might be envied by people from the US but its not all it seems. Wait times for all surgical procedures, to see specialists are ridiculously long, its a combination of scarce resources like doctors, operating rooms, etc. and that much of our care is rationed by the government as a function of budgets.

I'd be interested in hearing from @ZeroK, @Flatus Tube, @punkduck or anyone else and their experience with emergency medicine.

While the situation could be better I do have to acknowledge that my experience in the past few years was mostly excellent. I had two visits to Foothills emerg, both resulting in an inpatient admit to the hospital. In both cases I was triaged <15 minutes, seen by a doc <60 minutes and admitted into a unit <6 hours...all of that was IMO great care.

too many immigrants coming left and right. i know that canada is very well known for being "multicultural" due to the vast presence of immigrants coming.
i live in europe, where these cunts keep entering the country on a daily basis. they think they own the place, especially hospitals and they're a huge waste of time too.
i've had many experiences at the hospital. i remember being admitted to the ER due to low potassium (caused by my ed) and had to wait there from 11am 'till 10pm.
the hilarious thing was that there were a shit ton of immigrants screaming, complaining and doing whatever they wanted. they pretty much had nothing, they just felt like wasting a bed i suppose. they're so self entitled and arrogant, yet they always get whatever they wish for as if they were some sort of kings. not only they come in my country, where they get paid while doing absolutely nothing, but they also waste resources to satisfy their bratty wishes.
they're very ungrateful, yet they always have time to complain. in hospitals you can see a lot of em, always being the first ones to be admitted and treated

Same here...so sick of these fuckers

The insurance and clinics did research about who and why the people are going to the hospital here recently. They found out that 70% should just have gone to their doctor next Monday instead.
Or stayed at home, drink tea and go to bed.
But at the doctor, you get an appointment maybe a few days later first and maybe have to wait too, so they go to the next hospital because it's 'faster'. Or even call the ambulance.
Don't know about the time you have to wait here, I did a search but didn't find a statistic. (Or you have to pay)
The two times I've been there I didn't have to wait but it's a while ago (early 2000s)

Englands shit now, closed down the local a&e, and a little while ago the other a&e’s didn’t accept waiting, so you’d be waiting in ambulances 6-10 hours before going into a&e, and most people can’t get a doctors appointment, or they get a video appointment, I know just before the “pandemic” a nurse I know at the doctors told me their so busy because all the people who come into the country must register with a doctor, by seeing a doctor then 2 weeks time go in and see the doctor again to prove their staying in the country

That's odd. Shouldn't you guys have top of the line healthcare there? What with being the richest province and all from the tar sands. How are you guys going to defy the federal government like Danielle Smith threatens when you can't even mange your hospitals?

This is of interest to me because Americans fighting for Universal Healthcare always hold up Canada as their golden example about how amazing it can be...

I have Canadian friends and I know that the system has major flaws, and that doesn't take into consideration the population difference between the two countries nor our vastly different amounts of both legal and illegal immigration. So Canada is really our unattainable best case scenario and it's STILL fucked.

The Canadian population is sparce when compared the USA that is also a huge factor. So it makes sense to me.

One last thing I don’t really ever think about medical care due to the fact I haven’t been to a doctor in over 25 years. But I do like to know if I need emergency services I don’t need to wait in line. That’s ridiculous. Are there exceptions to the wait line rule? Is the dude missing half his face treated the same as the lady with really bad gas? So many questions.

Yes but Calgary isn't the great white north, its a major city so low population density shouldn't really apply.

There are some things about the system I like; once you get into the stream you generally receive very good care and for many things you don't get a bill.

I think the best case are counties with hybrid two-tier systems and a mix of private & public funding. Unfortunately we have groups like Friends of Medicare who refuse to allow the system to be improved.

There’s good and bad in everything, except black dudes they’re all fucky. 🤦🏻‍♂️👌🏼🤷🏻‍♂️

For the most urgent class of call out where I live, an ambulance 9 times out of 10 will arrive within 29 minutes and 16 seconds. The median ********** response time was 13:22. Across all urgency levels in our local area, that covers several small towns.

As for appointments to see a specialist in the capitol. I have a current wait time of 1 year for surgery, in order to get to this point of surgery referral, it took since January 2021.

If I want to see a doctor, I have to have a phone consultation appointment, then they will deem it severe or not, to warrant an actual physical appointment. This can take from 1-2 weeks for a local General Practitioner.

These times will only get worse...... Their response is to go private, so you pay for the same NHS surgeon to operate......and drop your wait time down to 25%.

So why do I get hammered in Tax and National insurance again?

It's only free if you have never worked and never plan to work in your life, otherwise like the UK, you’re taxed heavily on earnings to compensate.
