Karl Stefanovic has taken aim at Facebook claiming the social media giant has "a lot to answer for" after it was revealed it used children's emotions to drive ad sales.

In a monologue this morning, the TODAY co-host quoted a report in The Australian that alleges the $442 billion tech giant has been monitoring the posts of millions of local users as young as 14.

"They've worked out when to target young people who need a confidence boost by searching for trigger words such as insecure, stressed, defeated, overwhelmed, anxious, nervous, stupid, silly, useless... How disgusting," he said.

He quoted Dr Longstaff as telling the newspaper that Facebook used "covert surveillance to mine psychological insights on 6.4 million young Australians".

"So Facebook deliberately targets our vulnerable young to profit. Deliberately targets our most vulnerable young for profit. Does anyone else care? I do," Stefanovic said.
