Just walking around the area can cause this. A discharge of static electricity can easily ignite petrol fumes.

no loss there, a few vermin got exterminated by fire
Volatile hydrocarbons like petrol do explode, especially if there's a build up of fumes (which there would have been) and an ignition of the fume cloud - boom, like a natural gas leak in a house which destroys the house...same principle, just need a spark whether it's a naked flame or a static discharge.
