1/29/26 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - A man is dead and a 15-year-old girl is facing an assault charge after Knoxville Police Department officers responded to an endangered child alert Wednesday.
According to KPD, officers responded to an apartment at the North Park Apartments complex on Tillery Road, following up on a lead that the girl was there with a 46-year-old man.
Around 10:30 a.m., KPD’s Special Operations Squad knocked on the door before entering, the department said, finding both the man and the girl.
“While attempting to detain the two, the man produced a firearm and pointed it at officers,” KPD said. “Officers then fired at the man, striking him multiple times. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.”
During the operation, KPD said, the girl hit an officer on the head with a knife. The officer, who was wearing a helmet, wasn’t injured. That said, the girl is still expected to be charged with assault.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting and has identified the man that will killed as 46-year-old Angel Melendez. TBI said that the officers involved are going to be placed on leave, the department said, and the Office of Professional Standards will conduct an internal investigation.
