I knew someone who did that years ago. He grabbed it off the counter and bolted on foot. It wasn't one of those low profile cash drawers like this one. It was one of the old school registers. It was from a Chink restaurant. I think it was the restaurant employees that caught him and held him until the cops got there.
I don't know what his jones was but it was a powerful one to make him do something stupid like that. I think it was snowing at the time too. Between that, the weight of the register and being on foot he didn't have much of a chance at getting away. He died within a few years after that from an OD or a car crash.
