He must have touched the motor/gear lever when raising the foot.
Absolute idiotic posture on a lathe. If you need more force on the key, put a piece of tube as an extension on it.

Had a second look; could be a 'competition' to hold against the power of the machine.
Because he's standing behind the lathe, there are most likely no switches and levers to step on. They're visible at the front side.
But the other guy grabs with his right hand to something, you see it at the very last moment. Emergency stop? Difficult to say, this grab confused me.
