Is metal really that good?

Ive been told by friends and family to listen to death metal and different types of metal, Im a hard rock fan like Led zeppelin, but I might consider it but before I start does anyone have good band suggestions

Metal like many other genres of music have a ton of subgenres, but one of my all time favorite "metal" bands, specifically "gothic metal" or "doom metal" is Type O Negative. I personally really love their music. But the shitty thing about Type O Negative is the lead singer died a few years ago so won't be hearing any new stuff from them...ever.

I listen to all kinds of music that I like, even metal sometimes
I like harder death metal (not HC), I don't really like more melodic ones
