Older refrigerators, like the ones they were found in, have a locking mechanism that prevents the fridge from being open on the inside, and is designed to seal shut to prevent air from getting in. You have to pull the handle to unlock and open. Many children playing around them and hiding in them have died because of it. How they got in there in the first place, that we do not know.

Those poor kids were in the fridge for a while, rigor had set in. No matter what those adults did, they're already gone. 😔
