The riskiest fractures occur around C1-C2. There is a peg, the Dens, that arises from C2 and slips into C1 to hold the head steady as it moves. The spinal cord runs through the centre of the vertebrae, so it easily gets severed if the Dens breaks off and the head is subsequently moved around.
