The Secret Life of Pets 2

2.5 of 5 stars

The sequel to the very funny first movie, this one is just ok on the funny. I was expecting better. It's no Toy Story 2, more like the second Shrek movie. The cartoon is unusual in that it splits the plot. Max and Duke get a baby in the family, and the city dogs go on a road trip to a farm. The rest of the gang deal with saving a baby tiger from an evil circus owner, and getting a ball max loves from a cat lady with dozens of cats.
Don't me wrong, there are some lol moments, but for the most part it's chuckles, not guffaws.
As always, the kids will LOVE it! Big kids like me will be OK with it

Gomorra. 2008. Italy.
10/10
A slow but really good crime drama.
The film has 4 story lines going thru it, none of them 'converge' but they all deal with the organised crime.
At just over two hours it is a bit of a slog. This is the second time iv watched it and once everthing has been set up in the first hour things get darker in the 2nd. The violence is sudden and over quickly, no 'fist-fights' no huge shoot outs.
There is also a series of the same name, i watched the 1st season years ago, i recently read they had just finished a forth.

The Handmaiden. 2016. South Korea.
Dir. Park Chan Wook.
10 outta fucken 10.
This is a movie iv watched three times now and it never fails to keep me fully intrigued. It's broken into three parts.
First is the basic story, the second has flashbacks and fills in parts of the first. The third wraps everything up.
A erotic drama that is colourful and beautifully filmed. No fast editing, so stupid shaky camera.
Classic cinema.

Unstoppable. 2018. South Korea.
6/10
Taken made in S.K.
The main actor is a big bloke who had a part in Train to Busan, and stared in The Outlaws. That role was a thugish cop with a dose of humour.
This time he is a thug reformed, whose wife is kidnapped by a human trafficking gang. He enlists two 'sidekicks' and they provide most of the humour. The film works well in the sense that he is not a secret agent and really has to obtain information and follow clues. After that its kinda light. There aren't to many fight scenes and the drama is there, but not really effective. The actor, i feel, is getting sorta sterotyped as the loveable big guy. Fun movie, but only just passable. Not rewatachable.

Dark figure of crime. 2018. South Korea.
8/10
A cop investigates a series of unsolved murders while being drip fed information by the killer.
A fictional story based on true events. According to the film.
It was heavy on the investigation and finding people linked with the cases with a few flashbacks. The film worked well as a crime drama. There was a tension that ran thru it but it became a bit of a burden.
Not a easy watch due to the amount of information that is laid out but a fair look at what a police investigation could entail both good and bad.

High tension. 2003. France.
8/10
A horror with gore, tension and a good storyline. 2nd time iv watched it and i appreciate more now. It was 4-5 years later that Inside, Martyrs and Frontier(s) were made. The first two are definitely better films, the last not being quite as good. But with a 90min run time it keeps the pace going and the effects are great.
Classic film.

Believer. 2018. South Korea.
A remake of 2012 Chinese film (Drug war.)
Didn't know this was a remake untill i read a little about it. The story is pretty effective, has a 'Usual suspects' kinda feel to it because the viewer and most of the characters, cops and gangsters, don't know who the head bloke 'Mr Lee' is.
Light on action but with a good script and some great twists in the third act.

All is True

4 of 5 stars

I never thought I'd watch a William Shakespeare biopic, much less enjoy it, but that's what happened. This little known movie has been out since 2018, but made it to my tiny corner of the world, Chicago, this week.
It follows Shakespeare''s life after his theatre burns to the ground and he retires to his country estate, never to write professionally again. The examination of his family politics and buried secrets, lost to him as he entertained others, is a bit slow for the first 20 minutes, but gains speed as truths and heartbreak are revealed. I and the three other people in the 250 seat theatre enjoyed it.

Late Night

2 of 5 stars

The movie follows the slow downfall, even fossilization, of a total bitch female late night TV host (Emma Thompson) at her job for 40 years. Her writing staff is all male 40 somethings and your stereotypical idiots living a child's mindset. A female writer must be brought aboard! Enter a chubby Indian/American 20 something (Mindy Kaling) who is familiar with Twitter, viral videos and Facebook likes.
I really wanted to like this movie. The acting is good, the plot is fine. The funny is just not there. Uncomfortably unfunny at times. I wondered about the editing when it was over. Some chuckles for sure, but I wouldn't watch this on Netflix, much less pay to see it, which I didn't.

Child's Play

2.5 of 5 stars

So, another Chuck movie. I gave up watching them after the first one. But this one slotted in perfectly time wise between Late Night and Toy Story 4.
A disgruntled assembly worker in China, making a new generation smart toy doll, called Buddy, removes the built in safeguards (don't think too deep into this lol) and kills himself Apple worker style, jumping off the roof.
In the US, an unsuspecting poor working mom picks up this defective toy from the return pile of her store and gifts it to her boy.
The movie is actually pretty good for the first 30 minutes, until the doll, who changes its own name from Buddy to Chucky, goes.....um....all Chucky on everybody's ass. Then it just disintegrates into a cringe worthy mess. Suspension of disbelief is challenging, to say the least.
I probably would watch this on Netflix, but like Late Night, don't waste your money.

Toy Story 4

4 of 5 stars

I love this franchise. All of them are funny, this one included. Tom Hanks is his usual awesome self voicing Woody.
The toys, gifted from Andy to 3 year old Bonnie, are having a typical life when Bonnie is sent to preschool. There she makes a new favorite toy out of garbage items Woody saves for her. It's a spork with googly eyes and pipe cleaner arms. Some funny stuff follows as Sporky finds himself. Bonnie's family decides to rent an RV and go on vacation, where Sporky and Woody have adventures. Kudos for the writing of long lost Bo Peep who is now a very independent doll who takes no shit, especially from Woody.
There are places the movie will be quite dark for younger kids, but 7 and up should enjoy this very much.

The Wolf’s Call 3/10 Some French nuclear submarine movie that looks like school kids made it,no shit in one scene the sub has to surface to shoot down an attack helicopter that is dropping depth charges, the captain goes up with a rocket launcher with another guy with a machine gun,the rocket launcher has a lock on the trigger so captain gets his mate to shoot the lock of it turns around and shoots the helicopter out of the sky ?

Tyrannosaur. 2011.
10/10.
A low budget, small cast film about domestic violence and loneliness. It's started with the main character killing his own dog in a act of pure frustation. From there the film had a slow decent into bitterness. But what a descent it was. The lead actress was Olivia Colman who won an oscar for her role in The Favourite. I saw a bit of that film but it didn't appeal to me, in this she showed why she deserved that award. Bleak, sad, depressing but satisfying sum up this drama. Not a film for everyone, but 90 mins i felt was worth the time.
