movies Last Movie You Watched..

Nightmare alley. 2021.
6/10
A drfiter learns the art of carnival mind reading, which leads to his downfall.
Directored by Guillermo del Toro, a highly colourful and detailed film, the pace is slow from the beginning and continues that way.
Dialouge heavy it has alot of good actors that deliver. But the ponderous pace was noticable from the start. Interesting how it conclued, but even the epic visual style wasn't enough to hold my attention throughout.

The Piper. 2015.
7/10
A man and his son seek rest in a village, they rid them of rats and things go downhill for him and ultimately them.
Based on the folk take The piped piper, this is a South Korean version. Some things are added, but mostly the story follows the original. Interesting plot that moves along nicely. Even thou the ending is predictable, it has a creepy feel to it.

The Cincinnati kid. 1965.
5/10.
A young poker player plays a old hand at the game.
Steve McQueen stars in this poker film that doesn't really have a huge amount of plot and kinda gets thru on the charisma of McQueen. It takes an nearly an hour to get to the 'game' with the lead up being kind of underwhelming. There is a bit of a sub plot going on and the game itself does have a certain tension to it. Not knowing how poker is played wasn't a issue, but it was a middle of the road film.

The blood of wolves. 2018. Japan.
8.5/10
Older detective gets a young fresh faced cop as his partner just as he's trying to stop a war between rival yakuza gangs.
Excellent crime thriller that has enough characters on each side to keep it interesting, a crime at the center that needs solving because the gang that did it is trying to mussel in on their rivals. Starts violently and keeps a level of tension and brutality through out. The veteran cop is obviously able to navigate both sides which adds to the mystery of why the young guy is partnered with him. It's paced nicely and when things take a dark turn not quite near the end, it just adds a new layer of intensity.

No english subtitles.

El Topo. 1970.
6/10
A gunfighter goes on a journey of transformation.
Violent surrealism with loads of colour and a 'story' of challenge and rebirth.
At times so weird it was almost boring, but with a strange enough cast of characters that forced you wonder what the hell it meant.

I would like to suggest two other films by Jodorowsky that I think are outstanding:
1.) The Holy Mountain
2.) Santa Sangre
Although I love both of these, I would rate El Topo much higher than you did so maybe he isn't your thing but I lot of people, myself included, really dig his films.

Thanks FulciLives.
Been meaning to dig into some more of Fulci films, Zombie flesheaters is my absolute favourtie zombie film. Fuck that movie is a classic 10/10!!
I have seen Santa Sangre, i think i read it was one of the more 'accessible' films but still strange. Yeah...it was, intense and compelling but i liked it alot.
El topo was just a little too much. It got to point where i just couldn't watch the film and try to figure what it what trying to 'convey' at the same time.
Even after i listened to a podcast about it i found it too much. The Jodorowsky's Dune doco showed a man who was really colourful, layered but an artist with a vision unlike anyone. The holy mountain will probably not make my watchlist. I read a brief outline and thought...oh shit, not again.
Thanks for your comment.
Take care, Jon. ✌️

The devil strikes at night.
1957. Germany.
7/10
A murderer is uncovered by a detective but is hindered by the regime at the time.
Good crime drama that is kinda basic but today's standards but a interesting look at Germany in 1944.
The main plot is inspector who links a series of murders to one man. His investigation finds the killer who confesses. From there the SS get involved and 'decide' that a man linked to multiple murders is bad PR and the person found at the scene is publicly convicted, the killer shot dead, the inspector is sent to front.
The film has little things that show the attitude of daily life and the way the nazis controlled everything and the way some people subverted the system and others were in complete denial.

The red circle. 1970. France.
8/10
Recruited at the start a ex con teams up with two others to pull of a jewel heist.
Good slow burn crime drama that progresses nicely with a game of 'cat and mouse' between the cops and the thieves.
The heist itself doesn't happen till the second hour of the film, which gives it time to establish all the characters, given one of them is escapes from custody in the first hour. No high paced actions scenes or crazy edits make a long but compelling watch.
