Mother Joan of angels. 1961. Poland.
5/10
Considered a classic of polish cinema, the story is of a priest who travels to a convent of nuns who are 'possessed'.
It's a slow drama in black and white. Nicely filmed and for the first hour moderately interesting. After that, it dropped off and nearly so did i.
The Devils which was released in 1971 starring Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave is basicly the same idea just with alot of nudity and madness.
Interesting film with lingering shots and a definite style to it, but just a little too slow for me.
Excert from the film.

Cold fish. 2010. Japan.
8/10
The opening says it's 'based on a true story'. It's more likely inspired by true events.
A couple were convicted of killing four people, they operated a pet store.
The film is directed by Sion Sono whose film Strange circus i watched earlier this year. That film was intense and very surreal. It lost me near the end. Cold fish is two and half hours and is mostly straight forward. The last 30 mins is where it gets strange and kinda lost me, hence only an 8. It's a serial killer film and there are multiple people in on it. There is plenty of gore and the plot is layered, but easy to follow and pretty interesting.

Barking dogs never bite. 2010. South Korea.
7/10
The debut feature from Bong joon ho. Director of Parasite. An interesting comedy that definitely shows he knows how to write and direct. The story is kinda basic, a bloke gets annoyed with yapping dogs in an apartment building and kills a couple of them. It's well known that S.K. eat dogs but its portrayed in a 'backyard' kinda way. Obviously there is a redemption arc for the lead character, because his wife gets a dog. It was interesting but not entralling as some of his later films. There were some funny moments and cringe worthy ones, but for most of the film it kinda pandered along. The final 'saving of the dog' sequence was pretty funny, but then it slowed down again.
Mother and Parasite i would rate as two of his best films to date of what i seen.
Trailer has no english subs.

The Nightingale. 2018. Austraila.
6/10
Written and directed by Jennifer Kent who made The Babadook.
A rape/revenge story set in the colonial times of the 1820's. The main story focuses on Claire who sets out for revenge after she is raped and her family is murdered. She enlists the help of an aboriginal bloke called 'Billy'. I read a couple of articles regarding controversy of the rapes scenes near the start of the film. It fits the bleak tone of the film and essential anyway. The bigger picture was the treatment of the aboriginal people at the time. For a while she also treats her guide like an idiot. Slowly she see the error of her ways. But others don't.
The film has a few dream scenes and by the hour 45 mark i began to hit the FF button.
There is definite point about colonialism and the indifference of the authority at the time.

Schramm: Into the mind of a serial killer. 1993. Germany.
4.5/10
Directed Jörg Buttgerei who did Necromantic 1 & 2. The film follows a 'serial killer' and his eventual death. It's definitely a low budget film with a small cast, similar to the the necro films. The film is only 1 hour long and although it has alot sexual imagery, some of it pretty weird and some practical gore, it's not quite as full on as his first two films. It has dreamy surreal parts but lacks the sheer 'my-balls-are-hanging-out, fuck-ya!!' attitude of necro 1.
That movie ended with the main character stabbing himself to death while pumping jiz from a solid cock everywhere. Classic indeed.
