The Admiral: Roaring currents. 2014.
7/10
300 on the sea.
Based on the true story of a South Korean admiral who led a dozen ships against a fleet from Japan in 1592.
Similar to the movie 300 in the way a small group of defenders are face with overwhelming odds. The film lays out what happened in the lead up and then the main focus is Yi Sun Sin and his ships and the tactics of the currents in the strait the enemy are trying to sail thru.
Interesting action film that did keep me interested but all the while i keep thinking about how it compared to 300.
The battle scenes are a bit more chaotic but not spread out thru the whole film, it just builds up to the climax.
There is a far amount of CGI but it is used effectively.

The closet. 2020. South Korea.

Evil spirt bent on collecting unloved children.
A widowed father is too busy with his job and as a result his child is taken by a evil spirit.
The film has a small cast with the main focus being the father and his obsession with his job. From there is becomes a 'get-the-child-back' story with the help of a shaman. It had a one good jump scare and a few creepy moments, but felt kinda shallow.
The effects and the acting were great and a film with a similar feel but with more depth is The Wailing.
Still a solid movie from a country that produces some the best horror.

Leviathan. 2014. Russia.
8/10
The slow collapse of a family.
A man trys to stop his house and land on the coast being taken by a local mayor. He hires a lawyer from Moscow but it all slowly goes to shit. Slow and gradual decline with the husband being the central character. The film has some beautiful settings and the rusted broken boats and weather beaten houses reflect the life that they have. Nothing too suprising happens, but it just slowly gets bleaker and bleaker. It starts with a court hearing saying that will lose the land, the lawyer has a affair with the wife, the wife ends up dead, the husband is charged, the house is torn down. It has a real feel that 'life' doesn't have happy endings.

Monsieur Lazhar. 2012. Canada.
6/10
A teacher hangs herself and the replacement has to deal with that and his own problem.
The film has the duel issue of him not being a real teacher and waiting to hear about his status. It has good performances from the kids and the adult lead but only cranks up a little tension at the end.

Father of a solider. (Sotilaan Isa) Georgia. 1964.
8/10
A father goes looking for his son during WW2.
Well filmed and not epicly violent war film about a older father who just wants his son to come home. It starts with him leaving the village and making his way to the hospital where he was last seen. From there he joins up with some russian troops.
The film is not weighed down the horror and violence of war and with a run time of under 90 mins doesn't waste time.
Enjoyable film about a fathers love for his son and the sons dedication to country.
Trailer is in black and white. I watched it in colour. No overdubs.

The scarlet pimpernel. 1982.
9/10
A infamous figure is freeing prisoners during 'the reign of terror'.
Based on a novel the scarlet pimpernel is a period action thriller. Clocking in at just over two hours is a bit of a epic, but the settings and quality of the acting and script don't make it a chore to watch. This version was made for TV.
