Fletch. 1985.
7/10
Investigative reporter 'Fletch' is working on a story about drug dealing on the beach.
Amusing comedy/crime film starring Chevy Chase as 'Fletch'. Chase brings a natural charm and silliness to the character who is slightly sarcastic to everyone but always friendly. Only a couple of laugh out loud moments but the film doesn't drag.
A remake is in production with Jon Hamm.

The piano teacher. 2001.
8/10
A professional piano teacher starts a relationship with a young student.
Intense but quiet film about a professor of music that still lives with her dominate mother. She begins a relationship with a young student but her inabilty to connect with him leads to a bleak end.
The first half of the film shows her being pretty hard on the students regarding the classical music their expected to play, it's presented as very particular and alot is expected of the pianist. This plays a part in the 2nd half when the 'relationship' starts with the young lad. He has a simpler, casual attiude while she is very particular about what she wants. The resulting clash at the end is uncomfortable but predicatable.
Solid drama.

Battles without honour or humanity. 1973. Japan.
6/10
The origin of the yakusa in the aftermath of WW2.
Interesting film that is part one of a series of films detailing the rise and fall of people and groups. There are plenty of subtitles saying who is who and when they died. But it gets fairly messy with loyalty to one 'boss' quickly falling away in favour of getting something else or being cut out of a deal. In the end, not to interested in watching the rest.

The suicide squad. 2021
6/10
Comic book film.
Follow up to Suicide squad that doesn't reference the original but has some of the cast. I never got past the first 20 mins of the 1st one and didn't hold out much hope for this one. James Gunn with writing and directing credits has made a somewhat credible film.
Harley Quinn features in it in a interesting way. Kinda separate from the main cast due to being in the first and the garbage spin off is the same idiot character.
The rest of the characters i have no idea about, and it really doesn't matter. There are plenty of laugh out loud moments, at least for the first hour.
When the gloss began to fade was about 90mins into, a two hour film. Thats when i lost interest in what was going on and just FF'd to end.
Overall, watchable and entertaining. Forgettable in the long run, shows that Gunn is a capable writer/director.

The fury of a patient man. 2016. Spain.
8/10
Low budget, slow burn revenge thriller about a man who waits and plots to get revenge. The film starts with a robbery getaway that ends with the driver getting caught. From there its focus is a quiet single bloke who plays cards and hangs out in a local cafe. At only 90mins it takes a while to get going but this enables the film to give some depth to the small core cast of characters. About half way thru it begins to slowly crank up the tension. From there the back story is filled in, not thru 'flashbacks' but conversations.
Great thriller that just had long quiet scenes that really paid off when it came to any sort of violence.

Muoi. The legend of a portrait. 2007. South Korea.
3/10
A portrait contains a evil spirit who can take revenge on a person if another wishes.
Basic kinda story, had the usual step up scares, the plot was kinda see thru but the 30min mark. Clicked thru to the end.
Didn't really care.

Don Giovanni.
1979. Italian opera. Composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
10/10.
Three hours of Italian opera. Composed by Mozart the story is of a high born bloke that seems to think his purpose in life is to seduce women. At the start he leaves a woman whom he has screwed only to be chased down by her father. He kills him and she with the help of a few others track him down and try to hold him to account. He continues on his way. In the end, he invites the spirit of the dead father to dinner and is dragged to hell.
There is alot going on in this film adaptation of the play, but it's mainly the singing, costumes and settings that feature. This play (among others) was referenced in Amadeus (1984, excellent film). It took me 90mins to get used to it and from there it was really good. The daughter is played by Kiri Te Kanawa, a respected kiwi singer. The pace was pretty slow but visually it was great to watch.
No trailer.

The eye. 2002. Hong Kong.
4/10
A cornea transplant results in the woman seeing ghosts.
Average ghost story with some creepy effects. The plot moved along but never really got cranked up. By the one hour mark i really didn't care to much. The ghosts became kinda secondary as the focus shifted to the donors backstory.

The dawning rage. 2019. South Korea.
7/10
A corrupt detective is linked in to a bigger scam when his accomplice films a group planning an arson.
Good crime thriller that has little bits of humour thru it but quite a few sad themes. After the first hour it slowed down a bit but was still interesting.
Parts of it are shown in flashbacks, these help piece together the backstory when it comes to his interaction with the girl.

Dead mans bluff. 2005. Russia.
4/10
Two criminal brothers have to locate a stolen briefcase.
Mildly amusing crime black comedy about two brothers who while doing a deal have the wrong suitcase stolen from them.
There is a set up during the first part of the film but in the later half it slows right down and gets pretty boring. Lots of gangsters gets killed and its just not really worried about. The low budget combined with the grimy buildings, roads and car they drive in works well, but some it also shows in the latter part of the film.
A musical montage of the film. No particular order.

Highway to hellas. 2015.
3/10
German banker goes to greek island to check registered securities of a credit granted years ago by his bank.
Formula comedy about the stiff city man who comes to the quaint little sunny island and in the end is won over by the locals. Very colourful with nice scenery and some lighthearted moments.
Lasted about 50 mins in to a 90 min run time then reached for the remote.
