Brother. 1997. Russia.
7/10
Gritty crime drama involving a ex-serviceman who goes to live with his brother.
Upon meeting his older brother he is involved in the assassination of a local chechen gangster. From there he meets up with a woman who drives a tram and befriends a homeless german man.
There are a few more murders and although he says he was a clerk, it doesn't quite look like it. Slow but always keeps the interest even thou it has nothing but gloomly settings for the most part.

The Grifters

Good crime noir movie from the 90's (before John Cusack turned into a liberal twat)

Ivan the terrible part 1. 1944. Russia
7/10
Ivan the terrible part 2. 1958. Russia
8/10
The rise of the tsar of Russia.
Crowned tsar Ivans first action is subdue the neighbouring states. Right from the start of the film it shows the powerplays that were happening at the time. The characters are seen talking to each other about the new tsar and how they could maipulate him. This makes for a pretty dry sort of film. It benefits from eleborate sets and costumes and the dramatic acting style. There is a sense of the mindset of Ivan going downhill, but that is mainly left to the second film.
Once that begins it still has the politics involved and the dramatic style but a more paranoid Ivan. A section where there is a celebration is in colour which elevates things a bit and shows again the dramatic style, sets and costumes on display.

Dance scene in colour from the second film.

Death of a corrupt man. 1977. France.
7/10
A file of illegal dealings causes quite a stir.
Political crime drama that is a slow burn but interesting in the way it drags more people in as it progresses. Right from the start it's established that a corrupt official has murdered a business man who has an extensive file detailing a timeline of numerous bribes and such.
Filmed in 77 the emphasis deals is on paperwork and suspicion as it follows the main character. Not a predictable film with some interesting stunts and a good plot.

Boss Level.
Last night ...Good action packed funny fightfest.
Groundhog Day with all the fire power you can imagine.

The Tower. 2012. South Korea.
9/10
Escape from a raging inferno.
Solid action/disaster film that sets up a bunch of characters and follows them them through. It starts fairly campy and lighthearted, almost silly in a way. The main cast of characters are a range of people, a cleaner, the two people who are the romantic connection, the young daughter connected to the single dad, the firefighter captain, the rookie on his first day and so on.
The film takes the first 50 mins to set all this up and then its into the action part. Much like 'Exit' and 'Train to Busan' there is a range of hurdles for them to navigate. It does lose most of the camp factor but there are a few light hearted moments.
Ultimately, there is no single person saving the day. (Skyscaper. Dwyane Johnson.) It's a group effort and the film, although it borders on the eye rolling at times has a really good effects.
CGI and practical.

Brother 2. 2000. Russia.
Did not finish.
The brothers go to america.
Picking up where the first one left off, a friend of the soldier is getting ripped off in the U.S. so he and his brother go to sort it out.
While the first one was slow but interesting with a very local setting. This takes much longer to get going and no where near as interesing. With a two hour run time, it was nearly an hour before they even left for america. At the that point it just felt like a slog.
No trailer.

The element of crime. 1984. Dir Lars von Trier.
5/10
A detective goes under hypnosis in order to recover memories to solve a crime.
Debut film by Trier that sets a standard for what to come over the years. Not a easy film to watch as it had a burnt orange tinge throughout and was set in some sort of dystopian future.
Well crafted, but strange and not too engaging.

The stoker. 2013. Russia.
8/10.
A ethnic yakut who served in the Afghan war shovels coal into a furnace and writes a novel. From time to time his former sargent turns up with a body to be burned.
The film is quiet and straightforward. Little bits of black humour surface but the plot slowly unfolds. There is a soundtrack that goes thru most of the film and it gives the film a lighthearted feel. Near the end is when it changes, but even then it still maintains a steady pace.

Prisoners of the ghostland. 2021.
4/10.
A bank robber is tasked with finding the runaway niece of a local warlord.
Directed by Sion Sono is all the flair of one his films, but is not written by him so it feels muddled and slow. Staring Nic Cage as the bank robber, he is good in the role. But even thou his style of acting is kinda a natural fit, it feels forced.
Lost interest at the 45 min point. Fast forwarded thru to the end.

The stronghold. (Bac Nord) France 2020.
7/10
Three cops collect a pile of hash to pay off a informant in order to get info on a bigger deal.
Intense police drama that says at the start, inspired by true events. The first 3/4 of the film builds and the you get to know the characters and some the other officers. It falls down a bit near the end when they get busted. There is no motive as to why this happens, it just does. Still interesting but it loses all the momentum.
Trailer has no english subtitles.

8 heads in a duffel bag. 1997.
2/10
Black comedy about a mafia hitman who loses a bag of severed heads.
Joe Pesci stars as the hitman, David Spade is a uni student friend of the bloke who got the bag. Interesting idea that is 'colourful' with a series of set up scenes. After 45 mins it just all looked the same and was quite boring. The style is typical of the time but there are better films than this.
