A serial killer in the 1960's.
Based on a true story it starts with a murder that a bloke is confessing to in 1958. Several years later there is another murder. A young cop is brought in on the case. From there are a couple more bodies and attacks.
Slow burn crime procedural that is not flashy due to the time and with flash backs shows how the police obtained a false confession.
This adds another layer to the film because if they solve it, they convicted a innocent man. A small main cast with a decent setting in and around the area.
Steady and occasionally brutal with a ending that sticks to facts of what happened to certain people.

A old rich guy wants to finance a film.
Comedy/drama staring Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas as the director and flashy movie star. It has a small cast but lots of open spaces where the two leads for the film 'rehearse'.
A simple film about the pre production of a film and the trails that go into getting the actors in the right mind set.
With time the actors get more invested into their roles, it's a slow burn that did lag a bit in the second hour, but does have a few laugh out loud moments thru out it.

Man vs whale.
Captain Ahab takes to the sea at all costs to find and kill the whale that took his leg. Told by the sole survivor of the journey, it's a tense but slow drama about one mans obsession and the crew that follow him. Gregory Peck gives a great performance as Ahab, strong and unwavering in his pursuit of the white whale. The rest of the cast is solid, believeable in that they will follow. The effects are dated but don't take away anything from the film. The plot itself only really comes to a dramatic head right near the end, but it works as a short blast of intense conflict.

Army of shadow. 1969. France.

Resistance in France during WW2.
Based on a book that details what the resistance did, it follows a group of men and one woman. Not an action film but a very slow burn drama.
The characters are at the upper level and are mainly dealing with each other. This means the film doesn't seem to have to much of a plot and really relies on the viewer getting invested in what is being said. The last hour shows how things go slowly wrong and although they break one of their own out, it doesn't end well for anyone. Well filmed but a bit of a struggle to get thru.

Marat/Sade. 1967.

The murder of Jean Paul Marat by Charlotte Corday.
A play written by the Marquis De Sade while in Charenton asylum, as performed by the inmates. Filmed in one 'room' with an audience looking on behind the bars. There heads only visable as black lumps. Some knowledge of de Sade and the events leading up to the murder is handy. The film depicts it as a play so the actors are a level up from what a normal film would present. The bloke who runs the asylum is in the room along with his wife and daughter and a few nurses. He has to step in a few times to reign in de Sade, who himself is part of the play. It has a quite a few musical numbers that are well done with a sharp commentary about the time and the fact that things haven't really changed.
Intense and fast paced with good cast.

Limbo. 2021. Hong Kong.

Two cops, one new to the force, one hard to all, on the trail of serial killer.
Excellent crime thriller that had it all. Chase scenes, a truly hellish setting, detailed plot, emotional finale.
Filmed in black and white and used to full advantage. With the alleyways between tall buildings, general garbage dwelling areas, the main lair for the serial killer, druggies, thieves and homeless it gave a very bleak cluttered feel but with out color it doesn't overwhelm the viewer. Seven and to a degree Sin City came to mind with the overall look, but that's where it ends.
Small cast allows it to have an emotional plot that is simple to follow. The two cops don't talk to each much so is there 'getting to know the other' bullshit.
Tense right from the start and with a moderate pace, it doesn't loose the viewer at any point.

Venciafrenia. 2021. Spain.

A group of tourists go where their not wanted.
Simple film with alot of costume design, some historical themes and alot of mainstream 'horror tropes'.
The films main plot is a group of spanish tourists go to Venice and getting picked off one by one until there is the 'inevitable' final girl'.
It plays on the fact that 'popular' travel destinations have become hotspots and due to the influx, locals are becoming, annoyed.
They in turn simply kill the invaders.
I lasted 30mins before i started clicking thru the film. It was well filmed with the costumes and scenery a highlight.
The film came across as 'a-plot-by-numbers' processed streaming delivery service product. Having seen five of the directors previous films, The last circus, Perfect crime, being two that really stood as out, i can't help but wonder if this was deliberate.

A group of siblings are at the reading of their dead fathers will, but one their children is kidnapped.
Run time of just 77mins, the film is mainly in one room. They are all their when the phone call comes and they have to decide if they want to give up their share of the money to save the child.
It is a bit of a slog as its dialouge heavy for quite a while. But the twist happens with a flashback involving one of the brothers. From there the police get involved and it picks up markedly. Very funny second half with alot of black humour.

Abused girl takes a viscous revenge on a family.
A film that deserves its classic status. Far beyond a simple tale of 'revenge', it visualizes trauma and the fact that a truly broken person can not heal.
The violence is graphic and sharp with 'Luci' blasting the family right at the start. But her pain just won't end, as seen by the 'monster' that seems to be haunting and harming her. When the film takes a turn and slows right down in the 2nd half, it repeats on Anna what Luci went thru and explains the theory for it.
Excellent film that stands alone as a film in which the violence has a purpose and not just 'revenge'.
