Midori. 1992. Japan.

A young girl gets involved in a traveling show.
Interesting animation, violent body distortion, dark 47 minute runtime.

Ex machina. 2015.
6/10
AI gets loose.
Interesting and quiet film about a recluse scientist who invites one of his staff to stay with him for a week.
During the week he told he is going to interacting with a robot that is the AI.
The conversations between them all are interesting but with a limited cast and lofty ideas it feel short in the last half and hour.

Kill command. 2016
3/10
Dog soldiers with robots.
Interesting low budget action film with a cast of disposables. Same idea as Dog S. (training in the forest, run into unexpected enemy.)
But this relies on CGI robots with a android in the mix. With the typical stiffness that is connected to 'american soldiers' in basic action cinema it's a interesting watch, even if it does get boring at points.

Prime cut. 1972
5/10
A meat processer won't pay the mob, so a bloke and some others are sent to get it.
Simplistic film with a economic run time of 80mins. Some scences are pretty much of the time, while the action is simple but effective.
The story is what shines thru, the 'enforcer' (Lee Marvin) is not worried about what he is up against, knows the main players, with a sense that they have all met before. There are no flashbacks needed. Gene Hackman is well cast as the owner, his brash style goes well with Marvin.

V.I.P. 2016. South Korea.
7/10
Three people want a serial killer for their own reasons.
A North Korean with high level links and his family defected to the South, but his son as it happens, is a serial killer.
The police in Seoul have a body count, the intelligence service wants to get him and hand him over the Yanks, another north Korean defector, also ex-intelligence wants to take him back to N.K.
The first hour sets it all up nicely. Not too hard to follow the characters and what the are up. The 2nd hour is when they catch the killer and plans on all sides start to fall apart. This is also when the film got a little boring. Without any sort of chase, it became a 'how-can-we-screw-the-other-guys' kinda plot but still serious. Still good with a dramatic ending and quite a twist as it played into the fact that part of the opening scene was filmed 'in present day' and the rest was broken up to show how it got there.

No english subtitles.

Crimes of the future. 2022.
4/10
A performance artist and his partner has a show that involves them tattooing then removing organs that are generating naturally inside, kinda like a tumor.
This leads to them meeting another bloke who wants them to do a autopsy on his dead son.
The latest from David Cronenberg.
Full of practical effects and for the most of it a interesting storyline, but the film kinda fell flat after a while. Slow throughout with the world explained nicely, it became apparent that was not gonna be any sort of ramping up of tension or action.
Fans of his films might see it as a return to form, but viewers like me with a limited knowledge of his work will find it a slog.

Torture-centric horror film Captivity with Elisha Cububu…. I mean, Jack Bauer’s daughter from 24. (Jk, I like Elisha Cuthbert).

What did I think of it? Meh? Not great, just your average torture porn flick from the 2000s. I like that subgenre, but Wolf Creek is the best example of it. I fucking loved Wolf Creek.

The invisible guest. Spain 2016.
10/10
A bloke found in a hotel room with a dead woman has to arrange his defense with a lawyer.
Excellent crime thriller that slowly cranked up the tension. By carefully laying out the details for the lawyer, which then visually make up the 'flashbacks' that fill out the story. As it progresses it really lays out what could be considered a proper grilling from a top lawyer. No detail is overlooked and it becomes a real game of how the bloke will get out of the situation, or not.

Ginger snaps. 2000.
6/10
Teenage girl turns into a werewolf.
Good 'coming of age' horror. Interesting film about two sisters, one who gets attacked and the other who tries to save her. Light hearted tone throughout with typical teen angst. Not a serious watch, but deserving of its cult classic status.

Sleep tight. 2011. Spain.
7/10
A concierge gets involved with a woman who lives in the apartment.
Good thriller about a bloke that doesn't feel happiness, as a result he engages in malicious activity. Slow burn with a interesting view on things.
The main character takes some pleasure in bringing other people down but being helpful at the same time.
Economic run time of just over 90 mins so it doesn't out stay its welcome.
