The Deathmaker. (Der Totmacher) 1995. Germany.
9/10
The entire film is based on transcripts of the interrogation of serial killer Fritz Harrmann.
A slow building crime drama that shows the character of a man who was not that smart, but engaging enough to be able to commit and cover up a series of murders. Filmed mainly in one room with only a few extra characters at certain points, it gives the viewer a insight into how Fritz actually was, a solid, cheerful bloke, who wanted to please and help, but had a limited understanding of what he had done.
Certain scenes when he was describing how he dismembered and disposed of the remains have a chilling effect given how 'excited' he gets.
Excellent film in the 'serial killer' genre, that doesn't dramatize the crimes.

The trailer is just a black screen with organ music, near the end it shows the main actors face.

The housemaid. 1960. South Korea.
6/10
A piano teacher has a young woman move in with his family to be a live in maid.
Slow drama that has rather stilted acting but a interesting storyline.
Most of the film is set in the house, with the young maid eventually getting pregnant to the husband. This leads to a series of deaths and her dominating him and causing their eventual demise. The wooden acting makes for a rather boring film, but the underlying story of the man falling victim to younger woman still shines though. Well filmed with the composition of each scene putting a bit of emphasis on the plot.

Sorcerer. 1977.
9/10
Four men in two trucks transporting six crates of dynamite.
Vivid and tense thriller that sets up the back stories of the main four men, then follows them as they try to get back the oil field. The brutal conditions in the village, density of the jungle and intense terrain they have to navigate, with piece of shit trucks, guarantee a compelling watch.

The emperors new clothes. 2001.
7/10
Napoleon Bonaparte escapes his island prison with the aid of a double.
Cheerful and funny comedy about what might have happened in Napoleon had got back to France. The film has Ian Holm as the emperor and is mainly focused on him. Similar in a way to Dave with Kevin Kline but with the roles reversed. Things predictably go wrong from the start and although he does get a little help he has to learn to adapt to a new life.
Just over 90 mins with alot of brightness and funny moments, kinda forgettable but a entertaining watch.

Wow, he looks so young there. I think last thing I saw him in was the Hobbit. I guess he's dead now. I may watch this, thanks. Looks funny.

Vikram. 2022. India.
7.5/10
Drug dealers, corrupt cops, masked terrorists.
Very stylized Indian action film that has a epic run time of two hours fifty one minutes. The story is complex but a basic summary would be this.
Group of cops that are allowed to operate 'outside the law' are tasked with finding a group of masked killers that are filming their murders.
A violent drug dealer has lost a huge consignment of cocaine. The cops make head way on finding the killers, the dealers are slowly tracking down where the drugs are at. The film is steady and has alot of violence. Things eventually come to a head at a wedding. That's about two hours in. It is kinda light up until that point. When the special cops figure out who the masked guys are things take a interesting turn, and get surprisingly serious.
From then on it dials up the stylized violence. There is a massive shootout similar to the finale of Rambo 4 and it quietly ends.
The music is slow catchy techno with works well with the slo-mo action scenes. The stunts are well done, some cheesy but still interesting.
Being used to complex plots it didn't worry too much, but the fucken epic run time was a bit of an issue. Kinda funny in some parts but still a solid action film that delivered.

Special Delivery. 2022. South Korea.
4.5/10
Young lady looks after little kid.
A woman who works at a junkyard, drives cars to make 'special deliveries'. These basicly consist of someone who needs to get out of the city to certain place and probably has people after them. It sets up one right at the start, action packed it kicks the film off nicely. But then it falls pretty flat.
The main plot is her looking after the kid, whose dad was caught before he could get to the car. Her next 'delivery'.
No fancy driving, except for a couple of scenes. Its still a interesting film, but there are a couple of 'what was the fucken point of that' moments.
The characters are simple cut and paste baddies. She doesn't have a convincing backstory and its never established how the main villain is linked to the dead father, a corrupt baseball player.
It kept my interest, but only just.
The trailer sells it as high action. It's not. B grade s. korean action film.

Broken Embraces. (Los abrazos rotos, which for me sounds better broken hugs)

I was watching this movie and I must confess that it is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES, not only of Pedro Almodovar but of movies in general. It moves me too much and I find it to be so beautiful (visually and plot wise). Gorgeous shots, great use of color, beautiful story, it's metafictional (a movie about a movie, and that's super awesome). Anyway, see if you can please.
