Prey. 2022.
3/10
A predator is hunting and a young woman proves her worth by killing it.
Soft and lightweight with very little, gore, suspense, believable action. Similar to the orignal with a team getting picked off, jungle setting.
But it adds alot of sentimental plot lines, weird and worthless CGI. Predator saves her from a bear, in the trailer, rescued from a bunch of white hunters, still she kills predator. I had some hopes, it died quickly.

MEN. 2022.
7/10.
Pretty good horror involving a limited cast and a interesting setting. It starts with the woman arriving at the house and getting shown around and cuts back and forth to her and the partner having a massive arguement. There aren't jump scares as such, but alot of creepyness that really build up the tension. A big part of this is achieved by having a few scenes of her sitting with her back to a window and a bloke coming into view outside, watching her, and then moving on just as she moves or being at a distance, then suddenly coming forward.
At just of 90 mins it doesn't outstay its welcome. The ending is quite surreal, i thought a bit odd, but it worked well for the essence of the film.

Decision to leave. 2022. South Korea.
8/10
Slow burn crime drama about a woman suspected of the murder of her husband. Directed by Park Chan Wook is has a very subtle was progressing the plot.
With a run time of just over two hours, it took the first hour shows him slowly piecing it all together and kinda being drawn to her. When their paths cross again with her linked to another murder, it again shows the conflict in him of now having his wife left him and realizing that he does have 'feelings' for her.
Not a easy watch, because it was hard to see any progression in the plot. Excellent composition of the scenes with no jerky editing made it compelling impressive to watch.

Cure. 1997. Japan.
7/10
A bloke is using hypnosis as a means of murder.
Crime drama about a series of murders that lead to a suspect that has somehow planted suggestions for people to kill one another.
The main focus of the film is the detective and the way he tries to solve the cases. There is a level of suspense established at the start but with no real action in it, the film relies on the procedural nature of 'police work'.
Although there is a glaring question that could be asked like 'how did he get the people to kill against their will under hypnosis?'
Manages to make you ignore it in favour of seeing how the detective goes about solving the case.
Ends as quietly as it starts which seems questionable but does fit the feel of the film.

My joy. 2010. Russia.
5/10
A truck drivers journey.
Strange film that has alot of long scenes but a confusing 'plot', if there really was one. It shows a corrupt and poor Russia, hostile to people unfamiliar in certain areas. There are a couple of scenes set in WW2, and one that takes in summer then winter at one house. With a two hour run time it lost me at the 90 minute mark. At that point i wasn't sure if the main character was still even represented in the film.
Having seen various Russian films it fits a certain style of brutal truth story telling. One that shows the reality of some peoples lives and the underlying hostility that is needed to survive.
