Accident. 2009. Hong Kong.
6/10
A team of assassins stage their killings to look like accidents.
Following a mishap with a target that ends with one of the team getting killed in a apparent 'accident', the leader tries to figure out if they are being targeted.
Interesting film that is a great idea, but kinda suffers from a low budget which results in it being more of a basic thriller than any sort of action film.
Small cast keep it interesting, with a run time of 90 minutes it doesn't get boring.

Missing you. 2016. South Korea.

A serial killer is released, a cop and young woman has different reasons to want him back in jail.
Interesting revenge thriller that has a good plot but no action or real suspense to it. The film is well acted but failed to get going.
After the first hour there was a twist, but it got a little confusing and at that point, with really no action set pieces it solely relied on suspense.
For a S.K. film this is fine, but with two different plot lines after another 20 mins it lost me and i clicked thru to the end.
Overall a good film, just didn't reach a sustained level of interest.

Day shift. 2022. Netflix original.
Unrateable pile of shit.
Vampire hunter comedy.
A vampire hunter, kicked out of the union for breaking all the rules has to earn enough money to keep his wife and daughter from moving to Florida.
Having seen the trailer, knowing it was a Netflix 'original', i was still interested just to see what it was like.
Garbage.
Netflix pay the actors a decent amount up front, so there is no cut of what ever profits they might make. I'm unsure, but pretty certain, there is no press interviews for days on end to promote the film. So the incentive is there for a quick buck.
Far enough. But now it has become fairly well known, that Netflix produce a constant, consistent amount of pure shit.
I lasted less than 10 mins before i started clicking thru the film, i stopped a few times to see some of the action. But even that was dull.
At nearly two hours, it lumbers on with quirky dialogue, colourful scenes and jerky quickly edited action. When the main characters wife and daughter were kidnapped by the main villian, it was only really to set up the, jerky quickly edited action ending.
The only thing that really made me laugh about it was there are people who actually pay this company to provide, a constant, consistent amount of pure shit.

A magician at a kids party turns the father into a chicken.
Interesting drama that has a few lighter moments but for the most part shows how the wife has to cope with the 2 boys and a baby.
Debut film from the director, the camera is mostly in one position and the scene plays out. This largely consists of daily life.
It's set a rural area and the woman is largely quiet wearing the same clothes and head scarf. The men treat her kinda badly, but this perception is based on me viewing from a perspective where woman would generally have it alot better regardless. She struggles on trying to make ends meet and has to send the eldest boy to work in a factory, because they won't allow her to.
Overall it was a slow film, but interesting.

Don't deliver us from evil. 1971. France.

Two girls with a strong bond do ever increasing acts of violence.
Inspired by the Parker/Hulme murder of one of the girls mothers in 1954. The film depicts them taking a directly opposite view of their strict christian school teaching and rebelling with a increasing intensity.
It ends with a murder and them setting themselves on fire at a school play. The film is quite deliberate in the way it slowly builds. There is cheerfulness when the girls are together that contrasts nicely when they are apart. Even thou its over 40 years old, some of the scenes still have a shock factor to them.
Simple but effective coming of age story of two girls, that can't bear to be apart.

Samaritan. 2022.

Stallone superhero film.
A 'superhero' who 'died' when he faced off against his evil brother is recognized by a young kid.
Pretty useless addition to filmography of a decent actor. Starts with a very marvel looking intro sequence that tells the backstory.
The kid is being raised by his mother and he is fixated with 'Samaritan'. Cue him getting into trouble and being saved.
Nothing really made much sense it was so throw away. I clicked thru the film after i got bored and wasn't surprised to see that there was barely any action scenes till the end.

The Kingdom. (Riget) season one. 1994. Dir Lars Von Trier.
9/10
Mini series about a haunted hospital in Denmark.
Consisting of four episodes a season, it's a remarkable series.
The first episode sets up the characters nicely. There are a few but there roles are well defined. The old lady, mother to one of the porters, is a medium and hears a small girl crying. There are a number of other sub plots but the ghost story gradually becomes the main focus. This doesn't lessen the other ones and they all progress nicely. Episodes 2, 3 and 4 steadily get creepier as more details surrounding the little girl are revealed. The other plot lines progress nicely as well. Effects wise, it is limited because of the year it was made. So the ghosts are simple transparent figures. Some the surgery scenes are realistic and definitely well done. The only issue was the shaky camera and slightly shit look of the film.
It ended on a real cliffhanger, but ill be watching the four episodes of season two next week.
Season three was screened at the Venice film fest.
The trailer is simply the opening scene for each episode which tell the history of the hospital.

Thor. Love and thunder.
I got a copy simply because i'd read and heard Christian Bale was good in it. So i wont rate it, just a outline of what i thought.
Christian Bale was the only thing that was good in it.
It follows Thor and the guardians for a little bit then there is a female thor look-a-like, with the main villain being Gor the god butcher.
Quirky, but completely forgettable. Large parts of it were just talking, the 'action' scenes were mundane and very lackluster.
Russell Crowe was interesting, but again, forgettable.
It retells bits of the first thor film, which i have seen, but have no memory of who 'Jane' was apart she was linked to Thor. The previous one was entertaining. But only once.
This looked and felt VERY bloated. Taika hit the high water mark with Hunt for the wilder people. Modest budget with a realistic storyline.

The Kingdom. Series two. epi 1.
8/10
Picks up where the first series left off. Starts a little slow, but set up a new level of tension. Sea 1 ended with one of the doctors trying to get a abortion, but the baby is born with the head of Udo Kier. It's growing with long skinny arms and tiny body. There are ghosts present and one of the porters mother has just died. She was a medium and tried to seal them all at the end of the first season. There are a few other plot threads and the shaky cam, but a very interesting series.

Honk for jesus, save your soul. 2022.

'Mockumentry' about a preacher and his wife looking to revive their church.
Slow, but laugh out loud funny satire about not religion, but the mega churches that peddle salvation thru donation. The plot mainly focuses on the two main characters in a fly on the wall kinda style. There are some points where it doesn't seem to follow that idea, but largely it works.
I began to wonder at the 20 minute mark if i should just turn it off, the doco style it uses involves alot of conversations, and it seemed evident that at its core was a simple idea.
Overall it presented quite funny situations, along with some 'serious'. I ended up clicking thru to the end, but only within the last 20mins.

Emergency declaration. 2022. South Korea.
4/10
A terrorist on a plane releases a virus.
Slow drama that has all the elements of a good film, but fails because of its two hour twenty minute run time. Things move at a slow but steady pace to begin with. But when the main villain dies on the plane, it just kind of grinds on. Lots of characters are given time on the ground, as well as on the plane.
This hampers the plot when additional elements are added. Overall it has elements of a good, but not exceptional drama, but any tension is lost in the down time.

Bad day at black rock. 1955.
8/10.
A war veteran goes looking for a Japanese man and encounters a hostile town.
Solid simple drama with a running time of 80 mins. Nothing is given away and the story is allowed to naturally unfold.
The soundtrack is kinda loud but after a while it just fits. Dialogue heavy it follows the main character as he is stopped and obstructed from finding out what happened to the person he's looking for. Good film that keeps the viewer engaged with a limited amount of characters, simple plot, great ending when it all comes out.

The Tenderness of Wolves. 1973. Germany.
6/10
Melodrama about the mass killer Fritz Haarmann.
Shows as Fritz exploits his position as a police informant and the rampant crime during the time to prey on lost boys and sell their clothes and meat to unsuspecting citizens.
Has a soap opera kind of feel. Fritz is portrayed as kind, gentle and shrewed. There is no real violence or tension in the film which makes it drag a little, but
it implies strongly about what Fritz is up to, with a run time of just under 90 mins, it works well as a crime drama.
(english subtitles need to turned on)

See no evil. 2022. Denmark.
4/10
A family from Holland go to stay with a family from Denmark.
Good psychological horror with a overall excellent look to all the scenes and the way the actors gradually ramp up the tension.
The film is captivating within the first ten minutes, a steady pace of 'uncomfortable' it keeps the viewer hooked.
At about the 35 min mark, it was kind of predictable as to where the story was going. It maintains a 'real life' horror feel, but with just dread and nothing else to offer it wasn't hard to be kind of underwhelmed.
Clicked thru to the end, wasn't surprised.

The Kingdom (series 1 and 2) 1994. Dir. Lars Von Trier.

A haunted hospital.
Great series of four episodes per season. Establishes the characters and a series of plot lines and follows them thru to the end.
Reasonably equal parts drama, comedy and horror make it a interesting watch with it going thru all the plot lines.

Alienoid. 2022. South Korea.
8/10
Sci-fi action comedy.
The basic plot is that a alien race put prisoners from there planet into hosts on other planets. There is a 'guard' that makes sure they are secure and sorts out the new arrivals.
With a two hour twenty minute run time it gets alot more complicated than that. There is a time jump of about 600 years and two plot lines that switch every now and then. Its not too jarring but confusing at the start. As the film progresses it starts to make sense and in the last 30 mins, all comes together.
There is ALOT going on, but its action packed. Some of the cgi is incredibly questionable, while other parts are exceptional. This tends to show when there is close up footage, which is kinda shit vs far off space ship stuff, which is well done.
Enjoyable film overall with a layered complex plot that was interesting and engaging.

The pencil. 2021. Russia.
6/10
An art teacher from the city moves to a rural area to be closer to her husband who is in jail.
Moderate paced drama that does slow down for a bit near the end. The woman gets a job at the local school as the art teacher, cue predictable asshole student. As hard she tries, things don't go well. The town itself is shown to be bleak, with nothing really to do. Being from the city she has a more 'enlightened' view on life which clashes with the locals. The film itself has a dreary tone, one of inescapable monotony the characters seemed resigned to. It's typical of Russian dramas iv watched. A sense that life is what it is, you just live to you die.
