Man jumps to his death after attack on girlfriend, cops say

A man who was chased out of his girlfriend’s apartment for threatening her with a knife fell to his death when he slipped off the fire escape of their Bronx building as he tried to climb back in through a window early Sunday, police said.
The incident started when Pedro Polanco, 27, started arguing with his 36-year-old girlfriend inside their the fifth-floor apartment where they live with their children on E. 182nd St. near Mapes Ave in Belmont around 3:30 a.m.
Polanco allegedly struck the woman and threatened her with a knife before two men intervened and chased him out of the apartment and onto the roof, a police source said.
Polanco then tried to climb down the fire escape in an attempt to re-enter through the window — a route he had taken several times before, according to police.
During his descent, Polanco fell and landed on the pavement.
He died at St Barnabas Hospital a short time later.
He worked here as an assistant, a cleaner for five years,” said Santiago Domingez, 42, the building’s superintendent. “He was very respectful. All the tenants like him.”
