Wasantha was the chairperson of the Sunhill Group of Companies, which operate several hotels and entertainment complexes in the country. The other deceased was a 38-year-old former monk, Nayana W.E., while four others were injured. Seven people have so far been arrested.

According to police, the owner of the tattoo parlour, Dulan Sanjula, set up the parlour for the sole purpose of luring Wasantha to the location. Dulan had been paid a million Sri Lankan rupees - around $3,310 - via a wire transfer from a bank account based in Dubai. Dulan claims that some of his friends based in Dubai had sent him the money to pay for supplies for his parlour.
