A 19-year-old beauty queen and her sister have been found dead in Honduras. Miss Honduras María José Alvarado and her sister, Sofía Trinidad, 23, (both shown below) went missing last week after leaving a party, according to media reports.
National Bureau of Criminal Investigation chief Leandro Osorio said investigators had detained a suspect and seized weapons and a car. "We are 100 percent sure that it's them," he said of the bodies, according to the BBC. Her sister's boyfriend, Plutarco Antonio Ruiz, and three others have been questioned in the women's deaths.
Osorio said the women were likely shot and killed Thursday night, with their bodies buried in a mountain village nearby. Alvarado was shot from behind and her sister was shot from the front. The killer and an accomplice tried to clean up the crime scene, USA Today reported.
Alvarado had been scheduled to travel to London on Sunday to compete in the Miss World pageant. She trumped 18 contestants to win the Miss Honduras crown in April. "Open your hearts and understand my pain," her mother, Teresa de Jesús pleaded earlier this week. "'There is an all-powerful God that sees everything and I hope you set them free."
Alvarado was a student with aspirations of working as a diplomat for Honduras, according to the Miss World website. "In her spare time, she enjoys playing sports, including volleyball and football, and she enjoys performing the Punta Dance, a Garifuna music and dance style performed at celebrations and festivities," the website reads. "Aside from traditional Honduran music, María José also enjoys traditional Honduran gastronomy."
Honduras has the world's highest homicide rate, with 90.4 people murdered per 100,000 of the population, according to the United Nations. San Pedro Sula, near where the women went missing in Santa Barbara, is the world's murder capital, with roughly 1,200 murders a year.
