Yes, my child. You shall receive 72 virgin goats. Well… i might have boned a couple of them, but most of them are virgin goats. Will I get the goats my brother? May Allah be praised...
In Chapter One of Of Mice and Men, Rick James discovers that Wigginshas a dead mouse in his pocket and he reacts with anger. He demands that Wiggins hands it over ("Give it here!") and cannot understand why he would want to keep a dead mouse in his pocket. Moreover, Rick James gives Wiggins a warning against petting any more mice, dead or alive:Yes, my child. You shall receive 72 virgin goats. Well… i might have boned a couple of them, but most of them are virgin goats.
This incident with the mouse reveals much about Rick's relationship with Wiggins. He is far more than a friend or traveling companion to Wiggins. In fact, he is almost like a parent since his primary concern is for Wiggins' welfare. Note how he scolded Wigginsin the earlier paragraph for drinking too much water. Rick is, therefore, responsible for Wiggins and knows that he must keep him on the right path if they are ever to realize their dream."Well, you ain't petting no mice while you walk with me."
