When I was a kid I they aired British TV shows on PBS (Public Broadcast System) which is a publicly sponsored TV station in the US. So there were no ads. Between shows they displayed a schedule for the shows coming up. I always thought "Are You Being Served" was a talk show about local politics. I only learned fairly recently that it was a British sitcom. I always changed the station before it came on and never saw it.

There were some great British comedies, I remember Absolutely Fabulous, Black Adder, and YES, Benny Hill. Silly and Sexist and a darn good romp!
